The sleeve (12) is formed of linear, axially oriented fibres and the core (11) is formed of expanded, randomly oriented fibres. The method includes forming two or more strips (2a, 2b) into segments surrounding a conveying path, bringing the segments together into a sleeve former (7) to form the sleeve (12) and introducing loose fibres (52) between the segments upstream of the sleeve former (7) such that they are drawn therein in a random orientation and compressed between the segments as they are brought together to form a filter rod (8) with an aerosol permeable core (11) within the sleeve (12). The filter rod (8) is then cut to form the filter part (1).

A tow band (TB) for use in a cigarette filter is a tow band in which a plurality of filaments (F) made of cellulose acetate fibers are bundled together and crimped. In the tow band, a filament denier is not less than 6.0 and not more than 11.0, a total denier is not less than 5,000 and not more than 15,000, and a Cv value of the number of crimps of the tow band is not more than 4%.

SMOKING ARTICLE WITH COMBINED VENTILATION AND FILTRATION EFFICIENCY ADJUSTMENT
20190343173 · 2019-11-14 ·

The invention relates to a smoking article (10) comprising a tobacco rod (12) and a filter, the filter comprising a filter unit (14) comprising a first segment (16) of filtration material; a second segment comprising a tubular element (18) of filtration material upstream of the first segment (16), the tubular element (18) having an outer diameter (D2) and an inner diameter (D1). An inner surface of the tubular element (18) is substantially air impermeable. The second segment further comprises a frangible or irreversibly collapsible flow restrictor (24) disposed in the tubular element (18). When the flow restrictor (24) is in a substantially unbroken or non-collapsed state, the filter unit (14) has a first RTD. When the flow restrictor (24) is broken or collapsed, the filter unit (14) has a second RTD, the second RTD being smaller than the first RTD.

CIGARETTE FILTER OBJECT INSERTION APPARATUS AND ASSOCIATED METHOD
20190307163 · 2019-10-10 ·

An apparatus and method for forming a rod member used to manufacture cigarette filter elements, involve an insertion device for inserting objects into and along the rod member formed from a continuous filter material supply. The insertion device includes an insertion member adjacent to the filter material supply and defining a series of receptacles about a periphery thereof. The insertion member rotates in a first rotational direction to receive the objects in the receptacles at a first rotational position and to insert the objects from the receptacles into the rod member at a second rotational position. A cleaning element is adjacent to the insertion member between the second and first rotational positions in the first rotational direction, and engages each of the receptacles upon rotation of the insertion member between the second and first rotational positions to remove residual material from the receptacles prior to the first rotational position.
