NON-CONTINUOUSLY LAMINATED STRUCTURES OF THERMOPLASTIC FILMS WITH DIFFERING MATERIAL COMPOSITIONS AND FUNCTIONAL MATERIAL PROPERTIES

A non-continuously laminated structure of thermoplastic films comprises thermoplastic films with differing material compositions and differing functional benefits. In particular, one or more embodiments comprise thermoplastic films that are co-extruded separately and then combined together by a post-extrusion bonding process. The differing composition of the various films of the non-continuously laminated structure of thermoplastic films and the post-extrusion bonding process, provide the structures with the functional benefits of the individual films.

Embossed multi-ply tissue product

Disclosed are embossed, multi-ply tissue products having consumer preferred physical properties and an aesthetically pleasing appearance. The products may have a first ply embossed with a first pattern comprising line emboss elements and a second ply embossed with a second embossing pattern comprising dot emboss elements. In addition to having plies with different embossing patterns, the plies may have different tensile strength, such as a first ply having a geometric mean tensile (GMT) strength greater than 500 g/3 and a second ply having a GMT less than 500 g/3. Preferably the difference in the GMT between the first and second plies is at least about 20 percent, such as from about 20 to about 50 percent.

EMBOSSED MULTI-PLY TISSUE PRODUCT

The embossed, multi-ply tissue products have consumer preferred physical properties, such as improved sheet bulk and softness, and an aesthetically pleasing appearance. The products may have a first tissue ply having a molded topographical pattern and a first embossed pattern comprising a plurality of embossed elements disposed thereon, and a second tissue ply having a molded topographical pattern and a second embossed pattern comprising a plurality of dot emboss elements disposed thereon. The multi-ply tissue products generally have improved sheet bulk, such as a sheet bulk greater than about 15 cubic centimeters per gram (cc/g), and improved softness, such as an Average TS7 less than about 12.0 and more preferably less than about 11.0, such as from about 10.0 to about 12.0. The foregoing Average TS7 values may be obtained at a product geometric mean tensile strength (GMT) from about 800 to about 1,200 g/3.

EMBOSSED MULTI-PLY TISSUE PRODUCTS

The present invention provides an embossed multi-ply tissue product that is visually pleasing and has improved physical attributes. For example, the inventive multi-ply tissue products have reduced stiffness, such as a GM Flexural Rigidity less than about 600 mg*cm, improved absorbency, such as a Residual Water (W.sub.Residual) value less than about 0.15 g, and improved wet resiliency, such as a wet elastic strain ratio greater than about 32 percent.

Multi-layer packaging articles can include embossments formed on each layer. The packaging articles can be formed from multi layer webs. An embossing device can locally deform one of the web layers into another, overlying web layer to form the embossments. The webs can include features that permit the web material to be deformed with little, or no tearing of the web material.

Corrugating rollers

Corrugating rollers include an outer surface, a first flute on the outer surface, the first flute having a first height, and a second flute on the outer surface, the second flute having a second height that is different than the first height.

Embossed tissue

The disclosed tissue products have an embossing pattern that is aesthetically pleasing and provides improved product properties, such as good bulk, while reducing processing issues, such as wrinkling. The embossing patterns generally comprise a background and a foreground pattern where the background pattern is the dominate pattern and provides the product with a uniform appearance that connotes femininity, softness and cleansing. The background pattern is preferably formed entirely from open design elements such as first, second and third open, curvilinear line elements, wherein the second and third line elements are discrete, similarly shaped curvilinear line elements that are arranged parallel to one another and spaced apart about 1.0 mm or less.
