Spindle and Cover Components for Sheet Product Dispensers and Dispenser Systems Including Such Components
Spindles and cover assemblies for dispensing sheet product are provided, such as for use with coreless sheet product rolls. The spindle may include a hollow cylindrical body, which may have an elongated channel in a sidewall; a rod which extends partially out of the body; and a spring disposed within the body in biasing contact with the rod, wherein the rod may include a flexible tab matingly engaged within the channel, permitting the rod to translate within the hollow cylindrical body without falling out. In some other cases, the hollow cylindrical body may have an end with an opening bounded by an inward facing ledge, and the rod may include a radial ledge, such that the rod can translate within the body but cannot fall out due to interference between the inward facing ledge and the radial ledge. In some other cases, the spindle includes a friction hub disposed about and rotatable around the hollow cylindrical body between ends of the body.
Smart media hanger with media width detection
The present invention embraces a method and apparatus for providing feedback to a user on the status of media or ribbon of a printer. The feedback may be provided by incorporating a feedback mechanism in a hanger of a printer. The printer may be a thermal printer, but may be another type of printer. The feedback mechanism of the printer may be designed to work with one or more sensors to provide a feedback loop so that without an input from a user, the printer is able to detect the presence/absence of media or ribbon, as well as determine the width of the loaded media or ribbon. In another embodiment, the feedback mechanism is able to determine the weight of the roll of media or ribbon and hence determine the quantity of media or ribbon available on the hanger.
WIDTH DETECTING MEDIA HANGER
A printer comprises a processor; a media hanger comprising a sensor array receiving space extending along a length of the media hanger; and a sensor array positioned in the sensor array receiving space and communicatively connected to the processor, the sensory array comprising a plurality of sensor pairs, each sensor pair having an emitter and a receiver, the sensor array being configured to: emit light from the emitter outward from the media hanger, detect the emitted light after the emitted light is reflected off a surface of media loaded on the media hanger, transmit signal intensity of the reflected light detected by each of the sensor pairs to the processor; wherein the processor is configured to determine a width of the media loaded on the media hanger based on the signal intensity detected by each of the sensor pairs.

Medium winding device
A medium winding device for winding a medium includes: a rotatable winding member; a driver configured to rotate the winding member to wind the medium around the winding member into a roll; a rotating friction member rotatably disposed upstream of the winding member in a conveying direction in which the medium is conveyed, the rotating friction member having a high friction member forming an outer surface of the rotating friction member, and being configured to apply tension to the medium when the medium is wound around the winding member; and a tension adjusting member connected to the rotating friction member and configured to maintain the tension applied to the medium constant.
DISPENSER
A sheet dispenser system having a roll of sheet material and a housing to receive the roll. The roll of sheet material comprises a first end portion incorporating a key, and the housing comprises a mounting portion arranged to support the first end portion of the roll and a support portion arranged to support a second end of the roll. The mounting portion comprises a tilting member pivotally coupled to the housing to define an operative position, in which the mounting portion and the support portion are aligned to support the roll in the housing, and a loading position, in which the mounting portion and the support portion are unaligned to inhibit support of the roll in the housing. The mounting portion comprises a block arrangement which is movable between a blocked condition, in which movement of the tilting member from the loading position to the operative position is inhibited, and an unblocked condition, in which movement of the tilting member from the loading position to the operative position is permitted. The mounting portion is arranged such that the roll is movable between an engaged condition, in which the key engages the mounting portion, and a disengaged condition, in which the key is disengaged from the mounting portion, such that, when the roll is moved from the disengaged to the engaged condition, the first end portion of the roll moves the block arrangement into the unblocked condition, thereby permitting movement of the tilting member from the loading position to the operative position.
DISPENSER
A sheet dispenser system having a roll of sheet material and a housing to receive the roll. The roll of sheet material comprises a first end portion incorporating a key, and the housing comprises a mounting portion arranged to support the first end portion of the roll. The mounting portion comprises a lock arrangement which is movable between a locked condition and a free condition. The lock arrangement comprises a rotatable element configured for rotation about an axis, and a locking element configured for engagement with the rotatable element to inhibit rotation of the rotatable element, such that, when the locking element and the rotatable element are engaged, the lock arrangement occupies the locked condition, and when the locking element and the rotatable element are disengaged, the lock arrangement occupies the free condition. The mounting portion is arranged such that the roll is movable between an engaged condition, in which the key engages the mounting portion, and a disengaged condition, in which the key is disengaged from the mounting portion, such that, when the roll is moved from the disengaged to the engaged condition, the first end portion of the roll moves the lock arrangement into the free condition, thereby permitting rotation of the rotatable element. The locking element and the rotatable element are configured for engagement by relative movement of the locking element and the rotatable element towards each other in a direction along the axis of rotation of the rotatable element.
