Electrokinetic process for consolidation of oil sands tailings
A method is provided of treating liquid tailings using electro-kinetics by creating a variable voltage between two electrodes in the tailings. Flocculation and water release from the tailings is induced by establishing an electrical field between the two electrodes. The electrodes are connected to an electrical power source having the variable voltage to create a cathode and an anode. Compacting the flocculation solids and removing further water released from the compacting solids allows for the creation of a compacted material having a desired load bearing capacity.
Electrochemical conversion of organic waste
The present disclosure refers to a method of electrochemical conversion of organic waste to organic acid and hydrogen, comprising the steps of: (i) subjecting organic waste to ball milling under alkaline or acidic conditions to obtain pre-treated organic waste; (ii) introducing the pre-treated organic waste to a first compartment of an electrochemical cell, wherein the electrochemical cell comprises: the first compartment containing a nickel-based anode, a second compartment containing a cathode, and an electrolyte; and (iii) applying an electrical potential between the anode and the cathode, thereby producing organic acid at the anode, and hydrogen at the cathode. The present disclosure also refers to an organic acid or hydrogen produced from the method disclosed herein.
STAGED METHODS AND SYSTEMS FOR THE VALORIZATION OF SLUDGE AND BIOSOLIDS
Methods and systems for pre-treatment of sludge and biosolids in preparation for electrochemical valorization is disclosed herein. Such methods can include selecting a sludge source; preparing a slurry, where the slurry comprises the sludge source and an electrolyte; adjusting a pH of the slurry, where the adjusting the pH of the slurry results in the slurry having an adjusted pH in a range between approximately 8 and 13; flowing the slurry through a first electrochemical cell, where the first electrochemical cell enables partial oxidation of the sludge via hydroxyl radicals; and flowing the partially oxidized slurry from the first electrochemical cell to a second electrochemical cell for selective conversion, where the second electrochemical cell includes an anode, a cathode, and a catalyst.
Simultaneous recovery of coagulant and acid
Processes and systems are provided for simultaneously recovering coagulant and acid in a water treatment system. Sludge produced by the water treatment system is contacted with acid to form acidified sludge liquids. The acidified sludge liquids flow into a membrane assisted capacitive deionization system having both cation and anion exchange membranes. Metal cations from the acidified sludge liquids diffuse across at least one cation exchange membrane to form recovered coagulant, while anions from the acidified sludge liquids diffuse across at least one anion exchange membrane to form recovered acid. The diffusion rate of the metal cations across the cation exchange membranes is equal to or greater than the diffusion rate of the anions across the anion exchange membranes.

Method for treating a waste stream using a bioreactor and a membrane filter
Method for treating a fluid aqueous waste stream comprising a biodegradable organic substance, comprisingfeeding said stream into a bioreactor containing a fluid which contains biomass;reacting the biodegradable organic substance with the biomass in the bioreactor under essentially anaerobic conditions;taking a first flow from the bioreactor and using the first flow as a feed to a membrane filtration unit, in which said feed is subjected to filtration, thereby forming a permeate stream and a retentate stream;returning the retentate stream to the bioreactor;taking a second flow from the bioreactor as feed to a sludge treatment unit, in which sludge treatment unit the second flow is separated into a third flow, having an increased organic substance content compared to the second flow, and a fourth flow, having a decreased organic substance content compared to the second flow.
Dewatering oil sand tailings
Described herein, is a method of dewatering a slurry, the slurry being tailings from bitumen extraction of mined oil sand. The slurry is passed through at least one electro-kinetic thickener having a voltage gradient to separate water from the slurry to produce a dewatered slurry. The electro-kinetic thickener may comprise an auger to move the slurry downstream. The auger has a conductive component in the form of a wire, ribbon or rod as an anode (positive electrode) to attract negatively-charged slurry particles and to repel the positively-charged cations and associated water. The auger is shafted or shaftless. The electro-kinetic thickener may also comprise a porous drum having the auger disposed therein. The porous drum is a cathode (negative electrode) to repel the negatively-charged slurry particles, attract the positively-charged cations and associated water, and allow the water to pass through the porous drum.
