Quartz glass tube as a semi-finished product for an optical component
A quartz glass tube as a semi-finished product for an optical component that has an inner bore extending along a tube center axis for the acceptance of a core rod and a tube wall limited by an inner casing surface and an outer casing surface is already known; within said tube wall an inner region made of a first quartz glass and an outer region made of a second quartz glass with a different index of refraction surrounding the inner region contact one another at a contact surface which runs around the center axis. In order to provide a quartz glass on this basis that facilitates the production of optical components for special applications such as laser-activated optical components in wand or fiber form, the invention states that the contact surface has a non-round course in the radial cross-section and the inner casing surface has a circular course.

The multicore fiber includes a plurality of cores spaced apart from one another, and a cladding surrounding the plurality of cores and defining a substantially rectangular or cross-sectional shape having four corners. Each corner has a radius of curvature of less than 1000 microns. The multicore fiber may be drawn from a preform in a circular draw furnace in which a ratio of a maximum cross-sectional dimension of the preform to an inside diameter of the preform to an inside diameter of the draw furnace is greater than 0.60. The multicore fiber may have maxima reference surface.
COMMUNICATION SYSTEM AND CONNECTOR
A communication system includes three or more nodes and a multi-core fiber having a plurality of cores, the multi-core fiber being used in at least a partial segment of the connection between the nodes is provided. One node of the nodes is connected to the multi-core fiber and includes a connector configured to add and drop a signal to and from an allocated core exclusively allocated from among the cores as a communication path between the one node and another node of the nodes and/or configured to relay a signal transmitted through another core of the cores allocated for communication between other nodes in the multi-core fiber connected to the one node, and a relative positional relationship between a connection position of the allocated core in which a signal is added or dropped in the connector and a connection position of another core in which a signal is relayed in the connector is the same for all of the nodes connected to the multi-core fiber.
METHOD OF MANUFACTURING COUPLED-CORE MULTI-CORE FIBER
A coupled-core multi-core fiber in which an inter-core distance is stabilized is manufactured. A method of manufacturing a coupled-core multi-core fiber includes forming a second cladding base material by depositing glass particulates on an outer periphery of a first cladding base material and sintering the glass particulates. The first cladding base material has a hydroxyl group concentration that is less than or equal to 10 ppb; obtaining a ground rod by grinding an outer periphery of the second cladding base material; and forming holes in the first cladding base material in the ground rod, inserting a core base material into each of the holes, and obtaining an assembly.
Vacuum-based methods of forming a cane-based optical fiber preform and methods of forming an optical fiber using same
The vacuum-based methods of forming an optical fiber preform include applying a vacuum to a preform assembly. The preform assembly has at least one glass cladding section with one or more axial through holes, with one or more canes respectively residing in the one or more axial through holes. The opposite ends of the at least one glass cladding section are capped to define a substantially sealed internal chamber. A vacuum is applied to the substantially sealed internal chamber to define a vacuum-held preform assembly. The methods also include heating the vacuum-held preform assembly to just above the glass softening point to consolidate the vacuum-held preform to form the cane-based glass preform. An optical fiber is formed by drawing the cane-based glass preform. The same furnace used to consolidate the vacuum-held preform can be used to draw the optical fiber.
MULTI OPTICALLY-COUPLED CHANNELS MODULE AND RELATED METHODS OF COMPUTATION
An integrated optical module is provided. The optical module includes multi optically-coupled channels, and enables the use thereof in an Artificial Neural Network (ANN). According to some embodiments the integrated optical module includes a multi-core optical fiber, wherein the cores are optically coupled.
Multicore optical fiber and method for manufacturing multicore optical fiber
A multicore optical fiber (1) includes a plurality of cores (11 to 16) and a cladding (20) surrounding the outer circumferential surfaces of the cores (11 to 16). In the plurality of cores of the multicore optical fiber (1), a skew value (S) between a pair of cores is expressed by a predetermined expression. The multicore optical fiber (1) is bent in a specific bending direction, in which in all of the combinations of the pairs of cores in the plurality of cores, the pair of cores has the maximum absolute value of the skew value found by the expression and the skew value of the pair of cores is a minimum value.

There is provided a method for producing a multicore optical fiber while reducing the mass of a glass block to be connected to a common cladding tube. A production method for a multicore optical fiber includes in order, a preform forming step of forming a common cladding tube having a plurality of holes extending between a first end and a second end, an insertion step of inserting core rods in the holes in a state in which end portions of the core rods are recessed from the first end, a heat shrinkage step of reducing a diameter of the first end by heating, a sealing step of sealing the holes by connecting a glass block to the first end, and a drawing step of depressurizing insides of the holes from the second end and performing spinning from the first end while combining the common cladding tube and the core rods.
Twisted Glass Canes for Artists
A glass cane is manufactured by filling a glass tube with a combination of glass structures forming a cross-sectional pattern within the glass tube, to form a preform. The preform is attached to a draw assembly, such as a draw tower. The draw assembly is operated o draw the preform to a reduced-diameter glass cane by passing the preform through a furnace of the draw assembly while pulling the preform or the reduced-diameter glass cane and rotating the preform or the reduced-diameter glass cane.
