A silicate-based glass composition includes 15-65 wt. % SiO.sub.2, 2.5-25 wt. % MgO, 1-30 wt. % P.sub.2O.sub.5, and 15-50 wt. % CaO. The glass composition may also include 0-5 wt. % F.sup.−, and 0-10 wt. % ZrO.sub.2. The glass composition may also include one of 0-10 wt. % Al.sub.2O.sub.3, 0-10 wt. % SrO, and 0-10 wt. % ZnO.

GLASS STRUCTURE AND METHOD FOR PRODUCING THE SAME

A glass structure includes: a plurality of glass particles, each of the glass particles including SiO.sub.2, CaO and P.sub.2O.sub.5; and a bonding portion that bonds the glass particles to one another and contains hydroxyapatite, wherein at least a part of the hydroxyapatite is crystalline in the bonding portion, and wherein a porosity of the glass structure is 15% or less. A method for producing the glass structure includes: preparing a mixture by mixing a plurality of glass particles and an aqueous solution with each other, each of the glass particles including SiO.sub.2, CaO and P.sub.2O.sub.5, and the aqueous solution including calcium and phosphorus and having pH of 4.0 or more; and heating and pressurizing the mixture.

A silicate-based glass composition includes: 50-70 wt. % SiO.sub.2, 0.01-10 wt. % P.sub.2O.sub.5, 10-30 wt. % Na.sub.2O, 0.01-10 wt. % CaO, 0.01-10 wt. % MO, and 15-30 wt. % R.sub.2O, such that MO is the sum of MgO, CaO, SrO, BeO, and BaO, and R.sub.2O is the sum of Na.sub.2O, K.sub.2O, Li.sub.2O, Rb.sub.2O, and Cs.sub.2O.

Acid-resistant and biosoluble glass compositions and products made therefrom. The glass compositions exhibit acid resistance, durability in white water as may be used in a wet laid fabrication process, and good biosolubility. In another aspect, a glass fiber mat is made from such a glass composition, and may be used in the manufacture of lead-acid batteries, for example as a pasting material or battery separator.

A soluble sodium borate glass comprising cerium oxide that is stable against crystallizations, the cerium oxide comprising both trivalent Ce.sup.3+ (Ce.sub.2O.sub.3) and tetravalent Ce.sup.4+ (CeO.sub.2) states, wherein the cerium oxide nano particles are configured to be released when the glass is dissolved.

Also disclosed are methods of making and using the disclosed compositions, for example, forming microspheres for use in bioactive applications, and composition extracts for use in treating or healing wounds.
