Glass with High Refractive Index for Fiber Optic Imaging Element with Medium-Expansion and Fabrication Method Therefor

The present invention discloses a glass with high refractive index for fiber optic imaging elements with medium-expansion and fabrication method therefor, the glass comprising the following components in percentage by weight: SiO.sub.2 5-9%, Al.sub.2O.sub.3 0-1%, B.sub.2O.sub.3 23-28%, CaO 0-3%, BaO 6-12%, La.sub.2O.sub.3 30-34%, Nb.sub.2O.sub.5 4-8%, Ta.sub.2O.sub.5 0-1%, Y.sub.2O.sub.3 0-1%, ZnO 4-9%, TiO.sub.2 4-8%, ZrO.sub.2 4-6%, SnO.sub.2 0-1%. The present invention further provides a fabrication method for the glass with a high refractive index, comprising: putting raw materials quartz sand, aluminum hydroxide, boric acid or boric anhydride, calcium carbonate, barium carbonate or barium nitrate, lanthanum oxide, niobium oxide, tantalum oxide, yttrium oxide, zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, zirconium oxide and stannic oxide, etc. into a platinum crucible according to the requirement of dosing, melting at a high temperature, cooling and fining, leaking and casting to form a glass rod, and then annealing, cooling and chilling the molded glass rod.

Chalcogenide compositions for optical fibers and other systems

The present disclosure relates to compositions that can be used for optical fibers and other systems that transmit light in the near-, mid- and/or far-ranges of the infrared spectrum, such as for example in the wavelength range of 1.5 μm to 14 μm. The optical fibers may comprise a light-transmitting chalcogenide core composition and a cladding composition. In some embodiments, the light-transmitting chalcogenide core composition has a refractive index n(core) and a coefficient of thermal expansion CTE(core), and the cladding composition has a refractive index n(cladding) and a coefficient of thermal expansion CTE(cladding), wherein n(cladding) is less than n(core) and in some embodiments wherein CTE(cladding) is less than CTE(core). In some embodiments, the chalcogenide glass core composition comprises a) sulfur and/or selenium, b) germanium, and c) gallium, indium, tin and/or one or more metal halides.

RESIN COMPOSITION, OPTICAL FIBER AND METHOD FOR PRODUCING OPTICAL FIBER

A resin composition for coating an optical fiber comprises: a base resin containing a photopolymerizable compound and a photopolymerization initiator; and hydrophobic inorganic oxide particles, wherein the photopolymerizable compound comprises urethane (meth)acrylate and aliphatic epoxy (meth)acrylate, and the content of the aliphatic epoxy (meth)acrylate is 1.0% by mass or more and 45% by mass or less based on the total amount of the photopolymerizable compound.

RESIN COMPOSITION, OPTICAL FIBER AND METHOD FOR PRODUCING OPTICAL FIBER

A resin composition for coating an optical fiber comprises: a base resin containing a photopolymerizable compound and a photopolymerization initiator; and hydrophobic inorganic oxide particles, wherein the photopolymerizable compound comprises urethane (meth)acrylate and aliphatic epoxy (meth)acrylate, and the content of the aliphatic epoxy (meth)acrylate is 1.0% by mass or more and 45% by mass or less based on the total amount of the photopolymerizable compound.

REDUCED DIAMETER SINGLE MODE OPTICAL FIBERS WITH HIGH MECHANICAL RELIABILITY

The optical fibers disclosed is a single mode optical fiber comprising a core region and a cladding region surrounding and directly adjacent to the core region. The core region can have a radius r.sub.1 in a range from 3 μm to 7 μm and a relative refractive index profile Δ.sub.1 having a maximum relative refractive index Δ.sub.1max in the range from 0.25% to 0.50%. The cladding region can include a first outer cladding region and a second outer cladding region surrounding and directly adjacent to the first outer cladding region. The first outer cladding region can have a radius r.sub.4a. The second outer cladding region can have a radius rob less than or equal to 45 μm and comprising silica based glass doped with titania.

REDUCED DIAMETER MULTI MODE OPTICAL FIBERS WITH HIGH MECHANICAL RELIABILITY

A disclosed multimode optical fiber comprises a core and a cladding surrounding the core. The core has an outer radius r.sub.1 in between 20 μm and 30 μm. The cladding includes a first outer cladding region having an outer radius r.sub.4a and a second outer cladding region having an outer radius r.sub.4b less than or equal to 45 μm. The second outer cladding region comprises silica-based glass doped with titania. The optical fiber further includes a primary coating with an outer radius r.sub.5 less than or equal to 80 μm, and a thickness (r.sub.5−r.sub.4) less than or equal to 30 μm. The optical fiber further includes a secondary coating with an outer radius r.sub.6 less than or equal to 100 μm. The secondary coating has a thickness (r.sub.6−r.sub.5) less than or equal to 30 μm, and a normalized puncture load greater than 3.6×10.sup.−3 g/micron.sup.2.

METHOD FOR MANUFACTURING OPTICAL FIBER

A method for manufacturing an optical fiber includes: heating an optical fiber preform to draw glass fiber; measuring an outer diameter of the glass fiber to obtain a function of time; transforming the function of time into a function of frequency; identifying a first peak caused by a first drawing condition and a second peak caused by a second drawing condition in the function of frequency; and adjusting the second drawing condition so as to satisfy fn<fm−wm/2 or fn>fm+wm/2, where fm is a frequency of the first peak, wm is a full width at half maximum of the first peak, and fn is a frequency of the second peak.

METHOD FOR MANUFACTURING OPTICAL FIBER

A method for manufacturing an optical fiber includes: heating an optical fiber preform to draw glass fiber; measuring an outer diameter of the glass fiber to obtain a function of time; transforming the function of time into a function of frequency; identifying a first peak caused by a first drawing condition and a second peak caused by a second drawing condition in the function of frequency; and adjusting the second drawing condition so as to satisfy fn<fm−wm/2 or fn>fm+wm/2, where fm is a frequency of the first peak, wm is a full width at half maximum of the first peak, and fn is a frequency of the second peak.

Halogen co-doped optical fibers

A method of forming an optical fiber, including: exposing a soot core preform to a dopant gas at a pressure of from 1.5 atm to 40 atm, the soot core preform comprising silica, the dopant gas comprising a first halogen doping precursor and a second halogen doping precursor, the first halogen doping precursor doping the soot core preform with a first halogen dopant and the second halogen precursor doping the soot core preform with a second halogen dopant; and sintering the soot core preform to form a halogen-doped closed-pore body, the halogen-doped closed-pore body having a combined concentration of the first halogen dopant and the second halogen dopant of at least 2.0 wt %.

OPTICAL FIBER WITH NITROGEN AND CHLORINE CO-DOPED CORE

An optical fiber can include a core comprising silica co-doped with nitrogen and chlorine and an outer cladding surrounding the core. In some aspects, the core can be characterized by an annealing temperature of less than or equal to about 1150° C. and/or the core can include a relative refractive index Δ.sub.core in a range of from about 0.15% to about 0.45%.
