A glass material that includes: from about 0.55 to about 0.85 mole fraction of SiO.sub.2; from about 0.01 to about 0.23 mole fraction of Na.sub.2O, K.sub.2O, or a combination of Na.sub.2O and K.sub.2O; from about 0.05 to about 0.28 mole fraction of: Y.sub.2O.sub.3, BaO, or a combination of Y.sub.2O.sub.3 and BaO; and optionally Ta.sub.2O.sub.5. In the glass material, the sum of the Y.sub.2O.sub.3, the BaO and the optional Ta.sub.2O.sub.5 is from about 0.10 to about 0.31 mole fraction. The glass material may be in the form of microspheres. The microspheres may be used for vascular embolization and/or radiologic imaging.

Coated, antimicrobial, chemically strengthened glass and method of making

The disclosure is directed to a chemically strengthened glass having antimicrobial properties and to a method of making such glass. In particular, the disclosure is directed to a chemically strengthened glass with antimicrobial properties and with a low surface energy coating on the glass that does not interfere with the antimicrobial properties of the glass. The antimicrobial has an Ag ion concentration on the surface in the range of greater than zero to 0.047 μg/cm.sup.2. The glass has particular applications as antimicrobial shelving, table tops and other applications in hospitals, laboratories and other institutions handling biological substances, where color in the glass is not a consideration.

White glass-ceramic substrates and articles including tetragonal zirconia crystalline phase, and method of manufacturing the same

A glass-ceramic article comprises: a center-volume composition comprising (on an oxide basis): 55-75 mol % SiO.sub.2; 0.2-10 mol % Al.sub.2O.sub.3; 0-5 mol % B.sub.2O.sub.3; 15-30 mol % Li.sub.2O; 0-2 mol % Na.sub.2O; 0-2 mol % K.sub.2O; 0-5 mol % MgO; 0-2 mol % ZnO; 0.2-3.0 mol % P.sub.2O.sub.5; 0.1-10 mol % ZrO.sub.2; 0-4 mol % TiO.sub.2; and 0-1.0 mol % SnO.sub.2. Lithium disilicate and either β-spodumene or β-quartz are the two predominant crystalline phases (by weight) of the glass-ceramic article. The glass-ceramic article further comprises tetragonal ZrO.sub.2 as a crystalline phase. The composition of the glass-ceramic article from a primary surface into a thickness of the glass-ceramic article can comprise over 10 mol % Na.sub.2O (on an oxide basis), with the mole percentage of Na.sub.2O decreasing from the primary surface towards the center-volume. The glass-ceramic article exhibits a ring-on-ring load-to-failure of at least 120 kgf, when the thickness of the glass-ceramic article is 0.3 mm to 2.0 mm.

Disclosed herein are glass-ceramic compositions, articles made from the disclosed glass-ceramic compositions, and methods of making the same. More specifically disclosed herein is a glass-ceramic composition comprising: a) from about 2 mol % to about 20 mol % of Al.sub.2O.sub.3; b) from about 2 mol % to about 45 mol % of Li.sub.2O; and c) from about 48 mol % to about 80 mol % of SiO.sub.2; having a β-spodumene phase and a lithium silicate crystalline phase, and optionally a petalite phase.

Examples include a substrate with a region that transmits IR wavelength light, and a region that is substantially opaque to IR light. Examples include additional opacity in some or all regions to visible wavelength light and/or UV wavelength light.

PROCESS FOR OBTAINING A MATERIAL COMPRISING A GLASS SHEET

A process for obtaining a material including a glass sheet, includes providing a glass sheet including a first face coated at least partly by an essentially mineral first coating, the face having at least one first zone and at least one second zone, the at least one first zone having a higher emissivity than that of the second zone, then applying, on at least one portion of the second zone, a sacrificial layer including a resin, then heat treating the coated glass sheet at a temperature of at least 550° C., during which step the sacrificial layer is removed by combustion.

PHOTOSENSITIVE GLASSES AND GLASS CERAMICS AND COMPOSITE GLASS MATERIALS MADE THEREFROM

Photosensitive lithium zinc aluminosilicate glasses that can be selectively irradiated and cerammed to provide patterned regions of glass and lithium-based glass ceramic, and composite glass articles made from such glasses and glass ceramics are provided. The lithium zinc aluminosilicate glass can be negatively photosensitive or positively photosensitive to radiation having a wavelength in a range from about 248 nm to about 360 nm.

ION EXCHANGEABLE, OPAQUE GAHNITE-SPINEL GLASS CERAMICS WITH HIGH HARDNESS AND MODULUS

An opaque gahnite-spinel glass ceramic is provided. The glass ceramic includes a first crystal phase including (Mg.sub.xZn.sub.1-x)Al.sub.2O.sub.4 where x is less than 1 and a second crystal phase includes at least one of tetragonal ZrO.sub.2, MgTa.sub.2O.sub.6, mullite, and cordierite. The glass ceramic has a Young's modulus greater than or equal to 90 GPa, and has a hardness greater than or equal to 7.5 GPa. The glass ceramic may be ion exchanged. Methods for producing the glass ceramic are also provided.

Low crystallinity glass-ceramics

Embodiments of the present disclosure pertain to crystallizable glasses and glass-ceramics that exhibit a black color and are opaque. In one or more embodiments, the crystallizable glasses and glass-ceramics include a precursor glass composition that exhibits a liquidus viscosity of greater than about 20 kPa*s. The glass-ceramics exhibit less than about 20 wt % of one or more crystalline phases, which can include a plurality of crystallites in the Fe.sub.2O.sub.3—TiO.sub.2—MgO system and an area fraction of less than about 15%. Exemplary compositions used in the crystallizable glasses and glass-ceramics include, in mol %, SiO.sub.2 in the range from about 50 to about 76, Al.sub.2O.sub.3 in the range from about 4 to about 25, P.sub.2O.sub.5+B.sub.2O.sub.3 in the range from about 0 to about 14, R.sub.2O in the range from about 2 to about 20, one or more nucleating agents in the range from about 0 to about 5, and RO in the range from about 0 to about 20.
