A filter element for a particle filter having a porous filter body made of a ceramic material and including a plurality of flow channels extending fluidically in parallel. It is provided that the filter body is provided at least in a part of the flow channels with a coating made of a coating material, which is different from the ceramic material and is made up of orthorhombic crystals, namely sepiolite. The coating forms an outer layer of the filter element.

METHOD TO PROCESS A CERAMIC MATRIX COMPOSITE (CMC) WITH A PROTECTIVE CERAMIC COATING

A method of producing a ceramic matrix composite including a protective ceramic coating thereon comprises applying a surface slurry onto an outer surface of an impregnated fiber preform. The surface slurry includes particulate ceramic solids dispersed in a flowable preceramic polymer comprising silicon, and the impregnated fiber preform comprises a framework of ceramic fibers loaded with particulate matter. The flowable preceramic polymer is cured, thereby forming on the outer surface a composite layer comprising a cured preceramic polymer with the particulate ceramic solids dispersed therein. The cured preceramic polymer is then pyrolyzed to form a porous ceramic layer comprising silicon carbide, and the impregnated fiber preform and the porous ceramic layer are infiltrated with a molten material comprising silicon. After infiltration, the molten material is cooled to form a ceramic matrix composite body with a protective ceramic coating thereon.

The present disclosure provides a method of making a non-oxide ceramic part. The method includes obtaining a photopolymerizable slurry; selectively curing the photopolymerizable slurry to obtain a gelled article; drying the gelled article to form an aerogel article or a xerogel article; heat treating the aerogel article or the xerogel article to form a porous ceramic article; and sintering the porous ceramic article to obtain a sintered ceramic article. The photopolymerizable slurry includes non-oxide ceramic particles; at least one radiation curable monomer; a solvent; a photoinitiator; an inhibitor; and at least one sintering aid. Further, aerogels, xerogels, porous ceramic articles, and non-oxide ceramic articles are provided. In addition, methods are provided, including receiving, by a manufacturing device having one or more processors, a digital object comprising data specifying an article; and generating, with the manufacturing device by an additive manufacturing process, the article based on the digital object. A system is also provided, including a display that displays a 3D model of an article; and one or more processors that, in response to the 3D model selected by a user, cause a 3D printer to create a physical object of an article.

A method of producing a ceramic core for investment casting is provided. The method includes injecting a slurry into a disposable die. The slurry includes ceramic particles, a binder, and carbon fibers. The method also includes a first heating to eliminate the disposable die, leaving a cured ceramic core comprising the ceramic particles, binder, and carbon fibers.

HONEYCOMB BODY MANUFACTURING METHODS

Methods of firing ceramic-forming honeycomb bodies are disclosed that include heating the honeycomb bodies and blocking furnace gases from flowing through the honeycomb body by placing a layer selected from the group consisting of a graphite layer, a graphite-containing layer, an activated carbon layer, or an amorphous carbon layer adjacent an endface of the honeycomb body. Heating removes organic pore-forming material and graphite pore-forming material in the honeycomb body. The layer oxidizes to form a porous layer after firing to a first temperature, and furnace gases flow through the honeycomb body.
