The disclosed embodiments describe a novel approach to the utilization of the fine mineral matter derived from coal and/or coal refuse (a by-product of coal refining) to convert a non-biodegradable plastic into a biodegradable plastic. The fine mineral matter could also be based on volcanic basalt, glacial rock dust deposits, iron potassium silicate and other sea shore mined deposits. The conversion of the non-biodegradable plastic into biodegradable plastic in soil further increases nutrients availability in soil with the transition metals released as a result of biodegradation of the biodegradable plastic.

Calcium nitrate and potassium nitrate fertiliser particles

The present disclosure concerns fertilizer particles comprising calcium nitrate and potassium nitrate. It is found that fertilizer particles comprising 43 to 47% w/w calcium nitrate and 46 to 54% w/w potassium nitrate can be produced by melt granulation. Due to undercooling problems, such particles were not expected to be suitable for industrial production by melt granulation. However, the present disclosure provides a composition which forms a low viscosity melt with short solidification time. This was successfully achieved by reducing the water content of a fertilizer melt comprising 43 to 47% w/w calcium nitrate and 46 to 54% w/w potassium nitrate to less than 3% w/w of the melt.

Disclosed herein are soil amendments, generally in the form of coated perlite compositions, as well as methods of making and using the same. The disclosed compositions, methods, and systems provide for various beneficial enhancements to plants growth and soil health, and may decrease costs, for example by avoiding the need for multiple treatments. The presently disclosed compositions, methods, and systems also aid in prolonging release of plant nutrition into the soil (including silica), enhancing aeration, water retention, and drainage, resisting soil compaction, providing for pest and insect control, etc. In many embodiments, the disclosed coated perlite composition is a sterile composition, that is lightweight, and has a low dust content, which may provide for efficient and low-cost handling and transport of products comprising same. The disclosed coated perlite compositions comprise perlite particles having a coating of a mixture of diatomaceous earth phosphorous and may also include one or more of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium in the coating.
