A safety slipper (10) includes a stretchable fabric material upper portion (12) and a porous anti-skid lower portion. The upper portion has a foot opening (16) and a profile heel pocket (17). The lower portion (13) is made from a scrim cloth type material having a knit of polyester threads (21) coated with a soft poly-vinyl chloride outer layer (22). The lower portion provides for a cris-crossing pattern or matrix of interconnected nodes (23) with spaces (24) therebetween.

The heel contact member extends above a top portion of the footwear's sole and deforms into a cavity formed in the sole when the user's heel applies a force against the heel contact member. The heel contact member is resilient and returns to its original shape when the force against the heel contact member is eliminated. The heel contact member is particularly well suited to reduce heel slap of open heeled footwear.

A sandal with a magnetically connected upper straps uses a multilayered sole, multiple strap-attachment coupler, and a removable upper to enable a user to modify the sandal's appearance. The strap-attachment couplers are fasteners which are used to attach the removable upper to the multilayered sole. To accomplish this the strap-attachment couplers includes a connector-receiving receptacle and an upper-fastening mechanism. The removable upper includes multiple strap segments, each of which is connected to a connector insert. Inserting the connector insert into the connector-receiving receptacle enables the upper-fastening mechanism to become coupled to the connector inserts, thus tethering the removable upper to the multilayered sole. Additionally, the strap-attachment couplers are distributed across the insole, such that the strap-attachment couplers enable the user to create a desired type of sandal.

The upper surface of the protective layer of the footwear can have adhesive regions that secure the foot to the footwear and other regions that are not adhesively coupled to the foot. The adhesive regions can be under the heel, along the lateral side of the foot, under the first through fifth metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joints and around the perimeter of the foot above the plantar surface.
