A lateral side flap extends from the sole structure along the lateral side of the upper toward the tongue having an upper end next to the tongue. A medial side flap extends from the sole structure along the medial side of the upper toward the tongue having an upper end being next to the tongue. A plurality of lateral lace retainers is disposed along the upper end of the lateral side flap, and a plurality of medial lace retainers is disposed along the upper end of the medial side flap. A lace extends from the housing through the plurality of lateral and medial lace retainers in a crisscrossing manner across the tongue.

On the luminous garment, the at least one light source is positioned on the attire at at least one location whereby the wearer does not have to manually point the at least one light source ahead of the wearer and in the direction in which the wearer is traveling. The luminous attire may comprise different types of luminous garments. The wearer may simultaneously wear more than one type of luminous garment, if so desired.

The lower portion can include a mid-sole and an out-sole, and the lower portion can be coupled to the upper portion at the mid-sole. The lacing engine can include a top-loading lace spool to engage a loop of the lace to enable manipulation of the effective length of the lace through rotation of the lace spool, the lacing engine received within a cavity in the lower portion.

The shoe includes a flexible electronic display material having an embedded touch screen, which is operably connected to a rechargeable battery. In one embodiment, the rechargeable battery is secured within a heel of the shoe. In another embodiment, the rechargeable battery is disposed on a detachable outsole having the ability to generate power via static electricity generated by walking to recharge the rechargeable battery. The embedded touch screen may alter the colors or other qualities of the flexible electronic display. In this way, the wearer can customize the outward appearance of their shoes. Some embodiments include a ventilation system for cooling.
