METHODS FOR REDUCING THC CONTENT IN COMPLEX CANNABINOID MIXTURES IN WHICH THC IS A MINOR COMPONENT

Disclosed herein is a method for upgrading a cannabinoid mixture that comprises tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and one or more non-THC cannabinoids, when the cannabinoid mixture has a THC content of less than about 20 wt. %. The method comprises contacting the cannabinoid mixture with a benzoquinone reagent under reaction conditions comprising: (i) a reaction temperature that is within a target reaction-temperature range for the benzoquinone reagent and the cannabinoid mixture; and (ii) a reaction time that is within a target reaction-time range for the benzoquinone reagent, the cannabinoid mixture, and the reaction temperature; such that the THC content of the cannabinoid mixture is reduced to a greater extent than that of at least one of the one or more non-THC cannabinoids on a relative wt. % reduction basis.

The present disclosure relates to isolating one or more cannabinoids from an input mixture. There is disclosed an apparatus that comprises a first reaction vessel, a volatizing unit, and a distillation unit. The first reaction vessel provides a derivatized input mixture that comprises one or more derivatized cannabinoids. The volatizing unit volatilizes the derivatized input mixture into a derivatized cannabinoid-containing vapor-stream and a residue. The distillation unit receives the derivatized cannabinoid-containing vapor stream and separates a first derivatized cannabinoid within the derivatized cannabinoid-containing vapor stream from at least a second cannabinoid. There is also a method that comprises the steps of derivatizing one or more cannabinoids in an input mixture; volatilizing the derivatized input mixture to provided a derivatized cannabinoid-containing vapor stream; conducting the derivatized cannabinoid-containing vapor stream to distillation unit; and collecting a product that comprises the first derivatized cannabinoid.

A method of cannabinoid preservation includes separating a cannabinoid ethanol (EtOH) mixture from a cannabis extract through a filtration process; forming a slurry by combining a crystalline compound with the cannabinoid EtOH mixture; heating and agitating the slurry in a pressurized chamber to form a colloidal cannabinoid EtOH mixture; distributing the colloidal cannabinoid EtOH mixture into a tray to form an evenly distributed mixture layer; forming an evaporation vessel for the evenly distributed mixture layer through the attachment of a detachable cover to the tray; positioning and heating the evaporation vessel within a heating chamber; performing a rapid cools process as the evenly distributed mixture layer approaches approaches saturation temperature; repeating the rapid cooling process until crystal formation is detected within the evenly distributed mixture layer; and/or removing the evaporation vessel from the heating chamber upon detection of crystal formation.
