AGED AQUEOUS ANTIMICROBIAL COMPOSITION

An aged aqueous antimicrobial composition is prepared by mixing a carboxylic acid selected from maleic acid, crotonic acid, malic acid, tartaric acid, malonic acid, citric acid and mixtures thereof, with hydrogen peroxide; reacting the mixture to form a percarboxylic acid; and ageing the mixture that has the percarboxylic acid for at least 14 days.

PROCESS FOR PREPARING A PEROXYESTER OR PEROXYCARBONATE

A process for preparing a peroxyester or peroxycarbonate comprises the steps of: reacting an organic hydroperoxide with an acid halide, an acid anhydride, or a haloformate, in the presence of a base to form an aqueous layer and an organic layer, separating the aqueous layer from the organic layer after completion of step a), adding a reducing agent to the organic layer after the aqueous layer has been separated from the organic layer in step b), wherein the reducing agent reduces the organic hydroperoxide to a corresponding alcohol and forms a mixture, maintaining or adjusting the pH of the mixture of step c) to greater than about 6.8, and maintaining the pH of the mixture of greater than about 6.8 for at least 5 seconds.
