An article of footwear includes a sole, an upper coupled to the sole and having an inner surface and an outer surface, the upper being configured to receive at least a portion of a human foot within an interior cavity at least partially defined by the upper, a plurality of eyelets disposed on the upper, each eyelet including a pair of openings disposed in the upper, and a cord threaded through the pair of openings of each eyelet of the plurality of eyelets such that the cord includes a series of unexposed portions and a series of exposed portions. The series of exposed portions are disposed more proximate to the outer surface of the upper than the inner surface of the upper.

An inlaid yarn may extend through the knit element and between the first surface and the second surface. The article of footwear also includes a tightening grip operable to be moved away from the upper in a first direction to move the first cable in the tightening direction and a cable lock operable in a locked state to restrict movement of the first cable in the loosening direction and operable in an unlocked state to permit movement of the first cable in the loosening direction. A release grip is operable to be moved away from the upper in a second direction to move the cable lock from the locked state to the unlocked state, whereby the release grip is separate from the tightening grip.

The elongate member includes a series of first, or unexposed, portions that are disposed on an inner surface of the upper, and a series of second, or exposed, portions that are disposed on the outer surface of the upper. As fastener or lacing may be selectively threaded through an eyelet of the plurality of eyelets, where the fastener may be threaded between the second portion of the elongate member and the outer surface of the upper.
