Storage stable polyhydroxylated aromatic ether adducts of polyalkylene oxide are described. Reactive compositions are formed by combining an ether adduct with an aldehyde, optionally further adding a phenolic-aldehyde prepolymer. The reactive compositions are cured by removing water, by acidification, or both. The cured compositions sorb solvated compounds from environments containing water. The cured compositions are also useful for pre-loading with compounds that are subsequently released at a controlled rate into environments containing water.

LIQUID LIGNIN COMPOSITION, LIGNIN-BASED RESIN, AND METHOD OF INCREASING THE SOLUBILITY OF LIGNIN

The present invention relates to a liquid lignin mixture comprising 3-50 wt % methanol, 12-50 wt % lignin and 5-85 wt % aqueous alkali solution wherein the concentration of said aqueous alkali solution is 1 to 50 wt % of alkali in water, based on the weight of said alkali solution prior to mixing with the other components of the mixture. The liquid lignin mixture can be used to manufacture lignin-based phenolic resins, which are particularly useful in the manufacture of laminates.

A METHOD FOR INCREASING THE REACITIVITY OF LIGNIN, AND A RESIN COMPOSITION COMPRISING SAID LIGNIN

The present invention relates to a method for increasing the reactivity of lignin which method comprises the following steps; providing a mixture comprising lignin and an alkali solution wherein the concentration of the alkali solution of the mixture is between 5-50% by weight, storing said mixture for a period of at least 1 day whereby the reactivity of the lignin is increased. The present invention also relates to a resin composition comprising said lignin and use of said resin composition.

Phenolic resin obtained by polycondensation of formaldehyde, phenol and lignin

A lignin-phenol-formaldehyde resin, which is obtained by polycondensation of formaldehyde, phenol and lignin in the presence of a basic or acidic catalyst, is characterized in that the lignin is a lignin that is not chemically modified at the available functional groups. This lignin has a low molecular mass and includes available functional groups chosen from the group including aliphatic hydroxyls and phenolic hydroxyls. The degree of substitution by weight of phenol with the lignin is between 50% and 60%. The weight proportion of the lignin and of phenol in the resin is equal to the weight proportion of phenol in a lignin-free phenol-formaldehyde (PF) resin.
