A fiber-reinforced resin composition includes a polyamide resin and a polyolefin resin, and when one resin between the polyamide resin and the polyolefin resin is set as a first resin, and the other resin is set as a second resin, the composition has a sea-island structure including a continuous phase C consisting of the first resin and a dispersed phase c consisting of the second resin dispersed in the continuous phase C, and in a resin phase separation cross-sectional structure, a total of cross-sectional areas of dispersed phases having a cross-sectional area equal to or smaller than an average cross-sectional area of the reinforcing fiber is 20% or less with respect to a total of cross-sectional areas of all dispersed phases.
Thermoplastic compositions having high stiffness and methods of making them
An extruded thermoplastic composition includes: (a) from about 20 wt % to about 75 wt % of a ceramic fiber component; (b) from about 15 wt % to about 70 wt % of a polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) component including a high molecular weight PBT and a low molecular weight PBT; (c) from about 5 wt % to about 23 wt % of a polycarbonate component; and (d) from about 1 wt % to about 10 wt % of a compatibilizer component. Methods of making the extruded thermoplastic composition are also described.
COMPATIBILIZATION OF POST CONSUMER RESINS
Compositions comprising post-consumer recycled (PCR) waste are described. The PCR is combined with at least one virgin resin and a propylene-based compatibilizer that enhances the blend between the PCR and virgin resin as well as improving one or more physical properties of the composition. The propylene-based compatibilizer is a reactor made thermoplastic polyolefin or a heterophasic copolymer with a semi-crystalline matrix and a rubber component. This allows for the selection of a compatibilizer that can shift the composition's physical properties based on the end use application, and provide a stronger, miscible blend.
