A garment or other object is soaked using water or a different liquid, excess water is removed, the object is gathered and tied with one or more self-releasing bands, and at least one dye is applied to the object. The dyed object is then placed in a heat-resistant container and heated in a heat source such as a microwave. The self-releasing bands break during the application of heat, enabling easier and safer retrieval of the garment.
