A process for preparing an aqueous polymer dispersion, wherein the process comprising free-radically initiated emulsion polymerization in an aqueous medium, in the presence of at least one vinyl polymer A, to obtain a polymer B comprising a vinyl polymer phase B1 with a glass transition temperature of from −20 to +15° C. and a vinyl polymer phase B2 with a glass transition temperature of from +50 to +110° C., with the proviso that the difference in glass transition temperature between polymer B1 and polymer B2 is at least 40° C., wherein the weight ratio of polymer B1 to polymer B2 is from 80:10 to 10:20, wherein the at least one polymer A is obtained by a process comprising: free-radically initiated bulk or solution polymerizing of: from 5 to 25 wt. % of at least one carboxylic acid functional ethylenically unsaturated monomer A1, and from 75 to 95 wt. % of at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer A2 different than monomer A1, where the amounts are given relative to the total weight of monomers charged in the polymerization to prepare the vinyl polymer A, wherein the weight average molecular weight of the polymer A is lower than the weight average molecular weight of the polymer B, and wherein the weight ratio of polymer A to polymer B is from 10:90 to 40:60.

FAST HARDENING AQUEOUS COATING COMPOSITIONS CONTAINING GRAFT COPOLYMER OF POLYAMINE AND VINYL MONOMERS

An anionically-stabilized aqueous emulsion composition includes a) a first emulsion polymer having a Tg from −60° C. to 40° C.; b) a volatile base; and c) polymeric particles, different from the first emulsion polymer and present in emulsified form. The c) polymeric particles are polyamine graft copolymers, in which vinyl monomers form a polymer grafted to a water-soluble amino-group containing polymer. The anionically-stabilized aqueous emulsion composition may have a pH of from 8 to 11.

Disclosed herein is an aqueous latex composition comprising latex particles dispersed in an aqueous solution, wherein the latex particles are polymerized from at least one acrylic monomer in a substantially solvent-free, waterborne environment, and a 2-oxazoline compound is incorporated onto the latex particles. The 2-oxazoline compound is present from about 1 wt. % to about 5 wt. %. The 2-oxazoline may be grafted onto the latex particles. R1 moiety may be free of an acyclic organic radical having addition polymerizable unsaturation moiety. The aqueous latex composition may also comprises an acid monomer.

The present invention relates to novel polymer compositions, to a process for their manufacturing, to the use of said polymer compositions for modifying the viscosity of aqueous compositions, and to water-borne coating compositions containing the novel polymer compositions as thickeners. The polymer compositions comprise a polymer material which is obtainable by reacting: a) a polymer P1 having at least one functional group of the formula (I), where k is an integer from 0 to 4; n is 0 or 1 p is an integer from 1 to 10, the number average of p being from 1.5 to 10; Q is a divalent moiety selected from the group consisting of —O— and —NH—; P is a p-valent hydrophilic neutral polymer radical; and R.sup.1 is as defined in the claims; with b) a succinic anhydride of the formula (II) where R is C.sub.4-C.sub.24-alkyl or C.sub.4-C.sub.24-alkenyl.

Polymers including multi-stage polymers that combine the structural integrity of a polymer with a high glass transition temperature (Tg) with a softer, lower molecular weight polymer that coalesces quickly and is flexible to maintain scrubbability are disclosed. Architectural compositions containing these film-forming polymers exhibit anti-blocking properties within one hour from being applied to a substrate.
