Coating for capturing and killing viruses on surfaces

Disclosed herein is a nano-coating platform that is designed to ‘capture’ and ‘kill’ (i.e. inactivate) virus species to prevent surface to surface contamination/transmission and thereby the spread of novel viruses. The platform is comprised of alternating layers of charged polymers (producing a multi-layer coating). The cationic layer may be grafted with oligomeric species, chosen to bind strongly to unique/specific virus surface features, thereby mediating capture of the virus (with the choice of oligomeric species allowing generalization to a given virus). Natural light (excitation) to UV (local emission) up-converting nanoparticles are seeded into the anionic layer and mediate the inactivation (‘killing’) of the bound virus species.

Fast drying aqueous amine free coating composition(s)

Coating compositions and methods providing a high build, fast drying, fast hardening non-amine containing aqueous latex binders are provided, wherein the coating composition is applied to a substrate at a wet film thickness to about 15 mils that ensure drying times of less than 10 minutes. The binder requires the use of at least one specific coalescent solvent with both anionic and non-anionic surfactants.

LOW VOC COATINGS INCLUDING HYPER-BRANCHED ALKYLATED POLYMERS

A low volatile organic compound (VOC) coating composition with a low viscosity is described. The coating composition includes a hydrocarbon solvent; a reactive or non-reactive diluent; a drier composition; and a hyper-branched alkylated polymer. A colorant can be added so that the coating composition can be used as a stain, such as a wood stain. The hyper-branched alkylated polymer functions as the main binder to provide an effective coating composition having a relatively low VOC level.

Water Vapor Barrier Coating Composition

Described herein is a water vapor barrier coating composition that is especially useful for paper-based packaging applications. The composition includes a basecoat layer and a topcoat layer that are applied to fibrous substrates in sequential order as aqueous coatings. The basecoat layer is applied and dried and then the topcoat layer is applied and dried. The basecoat layer includes an aqueous solution of ethylenically modified polyvinyl alcohol and optionally a plasticizer. The topcoat layer includes an aqueous polymeric dispersion or emulsion, compatibilized with the base layer by adding a small percentage of ethylenically modified polyvinyl alcohol solution, and optionally a viscosity modifier, defoamer, release agent, slip agent, crosslinker, and/or anti-blocking additive. The composition includes a synergistic interaction between the basecoat and the topcoat. The composition is optionally biodegradable and/or compostable, along with a coated paper stock, without the need to separate and reprocess the coating.
