Aqueous Coating Composition, Substrate Coated With Such Composition, Process for Controlling Aquatic Biofouling Using Such Coating Composition
The invention relates an aqueous coating composition comprising an acrylic polymer dissolved in a liquid phase comprising water and a water-miscible solvent, wherein the coating composition comprises at least 50 wt % water, and wherein the acrylic polymer is a film-forming polymer obtainable by free radical polymerization of a monomer mixture comprising in the range of from 30 0 to 70 wt % of a poly(ethyleneglycol) (meth)acrylic monomer a.; in the range of from 2 to 20 wt % of an alkoxysilyl or alkoxyalkylsilyl functional (meth)acrylic monomer b.; and in the range of from 10 to 68 wt % of a hydrophobic ethylenically unsaturated monomer c. The invention further relates to a substrate coated with such coating composition, to a process for controlling aquatic biofouling on a surface of a man-made object, and to use of such coating composition to control aquatic biofouling on a man-made object.
Siloxane-modified binders and compositions thereof
A siloxane-modified latex binder includes a polymerization product of a monomer or a mixture of monomers for producing a latex polymer and a non-hydrolyzable siloxane. The non-hydrolyzable siloxane is represented by Formula (I): wherein: R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, R.sup.4, R.sup.5, R.sup.6, R.sup.7, and R.sup.8 are independently hydrogen, alkyl, —O-alkyl, —OH, —S-alkyl, —SH, amino, amido, epoxy, carboxyl, acrylate, (meth)acrylate, cycloalkyl, aryl, alkalyl, polyether, alkenyl, or alkynyl; and n is an integer from 0 to about 300; provided that at least one of R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, R.sup.4, R.sup.5, R.sup.6, R.sup.7, and R.sup.8 is an alkenyl or alkynyl.

SURFACE TREATMENT LIQUID AND HYDROPHILIZING TREATMENT METHOD
A surface treatment liquid capable of forming a hydrophilic resinous coating film adhering well to a surface of an object to be surface-treated and providing a surface treatment effect that does not decrease over time, even when the surface-treated article is exposed to a variety of agents, and a surface treatment method using the surface treatment liquid is provided.
A surface treatment liquid including a polymerizable compound (A), a thermal polymerization initiator (B), and a solvent (S), in which the polymerizable compound (A) includes a betaine monomer (a1) having a group including an ethylenic unsaturated double bond, an anionic group, and a cationic group, an unsaturated group-containing silicon compound (a2) having a group including an ethylenic unsaturated double bond, and a hydrolyzable silyl group, and/or a polar polymerizable compound (a3) having an ethylenic unsaturated double bond, and a polar group selected from amino group, carboxylic group, mercapto group, hydroxy group, and cyano group is used.
POLYMER DISPERSION FOR COATING WOOD FOR BLOCKING MIGRATABLE COMPOUNDS
The invention relates to an aqueous polymer dispersion, with said polymer comprising, in its structure, monomer units incorporated from a composition of monomers comprising: a) at least one (meth)acrylic monomer which is a C.sub.1-C.sub.18 (meth)acrylic ester, without any ionic group, b) at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer carrying at least one carboxylic acid group, c) at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer carrying a tertiary amine, and with said polymer additionally carrying grafted blocked silane groups in the —Si(OR.sub.1).sub.3 or —Si—R.sub.2(OR.sub.1).sub.2 or —Si—(R.sub.2).sub.2(OR.sub.1), with R.sub.1, R.sub.2 being an identical or different C.sub.1 to C.sub.4 alkyl, and with said grafted blocked silane groups being incorporated by at least one or two routes or their combination. The invention also relates to a coating composition comprising said dispersion of the invention and to its use for aqueous protective coating compositions for wood.
USE OF AQUEOUS COPOLYMER DISPERSIONS IN PRESERVATIVE-FREE AQUEOUS COATING COMPOSITIONS
A water-based coating composition has a pH of at least 10, is substantially free of preservatives and comprises (A) a pigment; and (B) an aqueous polymer dispersion produced by free-radical aqueous emulsion polymerization of a mixture comprising i) 20 to 79.95 parts by weight of at least one first monomer whose homopolymer has a Tg <25° C., ii) 20 to 79.95 parts by weight of at least one second monomer whose homopolymer has a Tg>25° C., and iii) 0.05-5 parts by weight of at least one hydrolyzable silane of the formula (R.sup.1).sub.mSi(R.sup.2)n(OR.sup.3).sub.4−m−n, with n=0-3, m=0-3 and n+m=0-3, R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 independently being selected from functionalized or non-functionalized, unbranched or branched alkenyl, alkyl, aryl, and aralkyl radicals and R.sup.3 being selected from acyl (C(O)Z) radicals, where Z is an substituted or unsubstituted, unbranched or branched alkyl, aryl or aralkyl group or hydrogen.
