GENETICALLY MODIFIED PHENYLPYRUVATE DECARBOXYLASE, PROCESSES TO PREPARE, AND USES THEREOF

Modification of the amino acid sequence of a phenylpyruvate decarboxylase from Azospirillum brasilense produces a novel group of phenylpyruvate decarboxylases with improved specificity to certain substrates, including in particular C7-C11 2-ketoacids such as, for example, 2-ketononanoate and 2-keto-octanoate. This specificity enables effective use of the phenylpyruvate decarboxylase in, for example, an in vivo process wherein 2-ketobutyrate or 2-ketoisovalerate are converted to C7-C11 2-ketoacids, and the novel phenylpyruvate decarboxylase converts the C7-C11 2-ketoacid to a C6-C10 aldehyde having one less carbon than the 2-ketoacid. Ultimately, through contact with additional enzymes, such C6-C10 aldehydes may be converted to, for example, C6-C10 alcohols, C6-C10 carboxylic acids, C6-C10 alkanes, and other derivatives. Use of the novel genetically modified phenylpyruvate de carboxylases may represent a lower cost alternative to non-biobased approaches.

An on-board fuel separation system includes a supply fuel tank configured to store an input fuel stream; a fuel separator fluidly coupled to the supply fuel tank and configured to separate the input fuel stream into a first fractional fuel stream and a second fractional fuel stream. The fuel separator includes a membrane that includes a plurality of pores sized based on a molecular size of one or more components of the first fractional fuel stream. The system includes a first fractional fuel tank fluidly coupled to the fuel separator to receive the first fractional fuel stream passed through the membrane and defined by a first auto-ignition characteristic value. The system includes a second fractional fuel stream coupled to the fuel separator to receive the second fractional fuel stream from the fuel separator that is defined by a second auto-ignition characteristic value that is different than the first auto-ignition characteristic value.

The present disclosure generally relates to systems and methods utilizing regenerative agriculture for the procurement, production, refinement and/or transformation of low carbon intensity transportation fuels, including low carbon intensity biodiesel and/or renewable diesel, low carbon intensity biogasoline, low carbon intensity aviation, marine and kerosene fuels as well as fuel oil blends, low carbon intensity ethanol, and low carbon intensity hydrogen, that may be beneficially commercialized directly to consumers. In further aspects, the systems and methods of the present disclosure advantageously generate low carbon intensity comestibles, including sustainably-sourced meal and/or feed. The disclosed systems and methods may be utilized and optimized such that the resulting fuels and foodstuffs are characterized by a reduction in greenhouse gas production and a diminution in the fertilizer, pesticide and water required for producing the associated crop feedstocks.

Method for revamping a conventional mineral oils refinery to a biorefinery

The invention relates to a method for revamping a conventional refinery of mineral oils into a biorefinery, characterized by a production scheme which allows the treatment of raw materials of a biological origin (vegetable oils, animal fats, exhausted cooking oils) for the production of biofuels, prevalently high-quality biodiesel. This method allows the re-use of existing plants, allowing, in particular, the revamping of a refinery containing a system comprising two hydrodesulfurization units, U1 and U2, into a biorefinery containing a production unit of hydrocarbon fractions from mixtures of a biological origin containing fatty acid esters by means of their hydrodeoxygenation and isomerization, wherein each of the hydrodesulfurization units U1 and U2 comprises: a hydrodesulfurization reactor, (A1) for the unit U1 and (A2) for the unit U2, wherein said reactor contains a hydrodesulfurization catalyst; one or more heat exchangers between the feedstock and effluent of the reactor; a heating system of the feedstock upstream of the reactor; an acid gas treatment unit downstream of the reactor, containing an absorbent (B) for H2S, said unit being called T1 in the unit U1 and T2 in the unit U2, and wherein said method comprises: installing a line L between the units U1 and U2 which connects them in series; installing a recycling line of the product for the unit U1 and possibly for the unit U2, substituting the hydrodesulfurization catalyst in the reactor A1 with a hydrodeoxygenation catalyst; substituting the hydrodesulfurization catalyst in the reactor A2 with an isomerization catalyst; installing a y-pass line X of the acid gas treatment unit T2 of the unit U2; substituting the absorbent (B) in the acid gas treatment unit T1 with a specific absorbent for C02 and H2S. The operative configuration obtained with the method, object of the present invention, also leads to a substantial reduction in emissions of pollutants into the atmosphere, with respect to the original operative mode. The invention also relates to the transformation unit of mixtures of a biological origin obtained with said conversion method and particularly hydrodeoxygenation and isomerization processes.

METHOD EMBODIMENTS FOR PARTIAL HYDROGENATION OF CARBOCYCLIC COMPOUNDS TO PRODUCE JET FUEL BLENDSTOCK

Disclosed herein are embodiments of a method for making jet fuel blendstocks that comprise partially hydrogenated carbocyclic compounds and which can be used to replace aromatic-containing fuels and that exhibit suitable seal swell properties. The disclosed method embodiments utilize catalysts and reaction conditions that facilitate partially hydrogenating carbocyclic compounds present in mixtures obtained from renewable sources, such as bio-based fermentation products. The reaction product mixtures obtained from the disclosed method can be blended with blendstocks to provide fuels that avoid soot formation caused by aromatic-containing fuels and that exhibit seal swelling that meet requirements in aviation systems.
