High density renewable fuels from zizaenes

A process for making high density fuels having the potential to increase the range and/or loiter time of Navy platforms. Derivation of these fuels from a sustainable source will decrease the carbon footprint of the Department of Defense (DoD) and reduce reliance on nonsustainable petroleum sources. Fuels based on ziza-anes have volumetric net heats of combustion up to ca. 18% higher than conventional Navy jet fuel (JP-5). Moreover, ziza-anes can be generated from sustainable biomass sugars via fermentation.

CETANE IMPROVER IN FUEL OIL

Marine fuel oil compositions are provided that exhibit unexpectedly high cetane numbers after addition of a cetane improver. Methods of making such compositions are also provided. The unexpected nature of the marine fuel oil compositions is based in part on the ability to achieve a substantial improvement in estimated cetane number by addition of a cetane improver to a hydrocarbonaceous composition with a natural estimated cetane number of less than 35. These unexpectedly high increases in estimated cetane number for fuels or fuel blending components with low natural estimated cetane numbers can allow for production of fuel compositions with desirable combustion characteristics while also maintaining a higher level of aromatic compounds and/or reducing or minimizing the amount of distillate boiling range components in the fuel or fuel blending component.

A composition comprising a distillate fuel, and an oligomer portion comprising at least one dimethoxymethane oligomer, DMMn, wherein n is less than 3 and/or greater than 4. A composition comprising a distillate fuel, and less than 10 volume percent of an oligomer portion, wherein the oligomer portion comprises at least one dimethoxymethane oligomer. A method comprising separating, from a mixture of DMMn oligomers, one or more DMMn fractions comprising oligomers of a desired chain length n, and combining a desired amount of one or more of the separated DMMn fractions with a distillate fuel to provide a fuel composition. A composition comprising a distillate fuel that includes renewable distillate fuel, DMMn and/or alcohol.
