A lubricating oil composition for an internal combustion engine, the composition including: a lubricating base oil comprising at least one mineral base oil or at least one synthetic base oil or any combination thereof, the lubricating base oil having a kinematic viscosity at 100° C. of 4.0 to 4.5 mm.sup.2/s and a NOACK evaporation loss at 250° C. of no more than 15 mass %; (A) a calcium-containing metallic detergent in an amount of no less than 1000 mass ppm and less than 2000 mass ppm in terms of calcium on the basis of the total mass of the composition; (B) a magnesium-containing metallic detergent in an amount of 100 to 1000 mass ppm in terms of magnesium on the basis of the total mass of the composition; and optionally (C) a viscosity index improver in an amount of less than 1 mass % on the basis of the total mass of the composition.

A grease composition for a constant-velocity joint includes a mineral oil, a thickener, a molybdenum dithiocarbamate, a potassium borate hydrate, and a zinc dialkyldithiophosphate, wherein a content of the molybdenum dithiocarbamate is 1.2% by mass or more and 8% by mass or less, a content of the zinc dialkyldithiophosphate is 0.3% by mass or more and 2.0% by mass or less, and a content of the potassium borate hydrate is 0.28% by mass or more and 1.9% by mass or less, and wherein a mass ratio of the content of the molybdenum dithiocarbamate to the content of the potassium borate hydrate (molybdenum dithiocarbamate/potassium borate hydrate) is 2 or more and 13 or less, and a mass ratio of the content of the zinc dialkyldithiophosphate to the content of the potassium borate hydrate (zinc dialkyldithiophosphate/potassium borate hydrate) is 0.5 or more and 3.6 or less.

The present invention provides a lubricating oil additive, including: a molybdenum compound (A) represented by the following general formula (1); and a sulfur-based composition (B) containing a sulfur-based compound (b-1) represented by the following general formula (2) and at least one kind of sulfur-based compound (b-2) represented by the following general formula (3) or (4), and a lubricating oil composition containing the additive. In the formula (1), R.sup.1 to R.sup.4 each represent alkyl groups having 6 to 18 carbon atoms, the groups being identical to or different from each other, and X.sup.1 to X.sup.4 each independently represent an oxygen atom or a sulfur atom. In the formula (2), R.sup.5 represents an alkyl group having 1 to 22 carbon atoms, R.sup.6 represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group having 1 to 20 carbon atoms, R.sup.7 represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group having 1 to 20 carbon atoms, and “a” represents a number from 1 to 10. In the formulae (3) and (4), R.sup.8 to R.sup.11 each represent alkylene groups having 1 to 28 carbon atoms, the groups being identical to or different from each other, R.sup.12 and R.sup.13 each independently represent a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group having 1 to 3 carbon atoms, and “b” and “c” each independently represent a number from 1 to 8, provided that at least one of R.sup.12 or R.sup.13 represents an alkyl group having 1 to 3 carbon atoms. ##STR00001##
