The present invention relates to a photobioreactor intended for the notably continuous culture of photosynthetic microorganisms, preferably microalgae, comprising at least one culture enclosure (1) intended to contain the microorganism culture medium (3) and at least one light source (2) outside the culture enclosure (1), characterized in that it further comprises at least one cylindrical or prismatic light diffusion element (4) placed inside the culture enclosure (1), the light diffusion element (4) being coupled optically with the light source (2) so as to collect the photons emitted by the light source (2) and to return them to the culture medium (3) by its lateral surface.

The present invention also relates to the use of a photobioreactor to cultivate photosynthetic microorganisms and to the use of a light diffusion element (4) to illuminate the culture medium of a photobioreactor.

Fermentation of gaseous substrates

A reactor system is provided for improved fermentation of a gaseous substrate through the introduction of a secondary loop to a forced-circulation loop reactor. The reactor comprises a primary loop through which fermentation broth comprising a gaseous substrate is circulated through a riser segment and a downcomer section by a loop pump. Downstream of the loop pump a portion of fermentation broth is withdrawn from the downcomer section and is directed to the top of the reactor via a secondary loop. Further provided is a method for improving the mass transfer of a gaseous substrate to a fermentation broth in a fermentation vessel comprising a secondary loop. Further provided is a method for reducing foam in the headspace of a fermentation vessel comprising a secondary loop.

The invention described herein presents compositions and methods for a multistep biological and chemical process for the capture and conversion of carbon dioxide and/or other forms of inorganic carbon into organic chemicals including biofuels or other useful industrial, chemical, pharmaceutical, or biomass products. One or more process steps utilizes chemoautotrophic microorganisms to fix inorganic carbon into organic compounds through chemosynthesis. An additional feature described are process steps whereby electron donors used for the chemosynthetic fixation of carbon are generated by chemical or electrochemical means, or are produced from inorganic or waste sources. An additional feature described are process steps for recovery of useful chemicals produced by the carbon dioxide capture and conversion process, both from chemosynthetic reaction steps, as well as from non-biological reaction steps.

BALANCED SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR PRODUCTION OF MICROBIAL OUTPUT

A system and method for the production of microbial consortiums and by-product material is provided. A physical containment system comprising phase spaces arranged in a discrete order to favor specific biological reactions is also provided. Phase profiles and phase data sets include the pre-determined physical and biological parameters for the phase space transitions. Movement of material from one phase to the next is hydraulically balanced enabling working fluid to continuously move in a fixed direction and rate of flow. Continuous monitoring of phase profiles and phase data sets provide feedback to the system enabling alteration of the conditions in the system to control reactions therein.
