Disclosed herein is an instrument suitable for processing cells for example culturing, concentrating or washing said cells, the instrument comprising: a housing for accommodating mechanical elements including at least one fluid pump; and a disposable processing kit complementary to the mechanical elements within the housing and comprising a fluid circuit including a fluid reservoir and plural fluid paths capable of carrying fluid flow caused by said pump(s), the instrument further including a mechanism for determining the quantity, or change in quantity of the fluid in the reservoir resulting from said fluid flow, the instrument yet further comprising a controller operable to control at least the pump and operable to perform a fault determination process, which includes the steps of determining the expected flow rate of said pump(s) calculated from the speed of the pump(s) and comparing that expected flow with the change in quantity of the fluid in the reservoir as determined by said mechanism.

Pumpless Microfluidic Devices and Uses Thereof

Provided is an apparatus for inducing and/or controlling flow of a fluid within a microchannel in a microfluidic device. The apparatus includes a fluid reservoir configured for holding a volume of fluid to be transported through said microfluidic channel and also configured for fluid connection to an inlet of said microfluidic channel. The apparatus also includes an evaporation reservoir configured for fluid connection to an outlet of said microfluidic channel. The evaporation reservoir includes at least one wetting, wicking or hydrophilic structure positioned at least partly within the reservoir. The wetting, wicking, or hydrophilic structure is capable of absorbing or conducting a fluid present in the microfluidic channel via wicking action or capillary force and maintaining a substantially constant volume of fluid in the evaporation reservoir. In use, evaporation of fluid at the outlet results in fluid being drawn from the fluid reservoir through the microfluidic channel to thereby create a flow of the fluid in the microfluidic channel.

SYSTEMS AND METHODS FOR MANUFACTURING BIOLOGICALLY-PRODUCED PRODUCTS

Aspects of the present disclosure relate to systems and methods for manufacturing biologically-produced pharmaceutical products. Some of the systems described herein comprise an upstream component comprising a bioreactor and at least one filter (e.g., a filter probe) integrated with a downstream component comprising a purification module comprising at least a first partitioning unit and a second partitioning unit. In some embodiments; these integrated biomanufacturing systems may be operated under continuous or conditions and may be capable of efficiently producing pure, high-quality pharmaceutical products.

CELL DISPENSING DEVICE AND CELL DISPENSING METHOD

The purpose of the present invention is to efficiently dispense cells while reducing the risk of incorporating bacteria, etc. A cell dispensing device 1 includes: a first tube 23a which connects a container 21 and a dispensing container 22; a syringe pump 24 attached to a second tube 23b connected to a branching portion 31 formed on the first tube 23a; and a buffer tank 25 provided between the syringe pump 24 and the branching portion 31. In addition, a cell suspension contained in the container 21 is temporarily stored in the buffer tank 25 by means of the syringe pump 24, and the cell suspension stored in the buffer tank 25 is delivered to the dispensing container 22.

MICROFLUIDIC SYSTEMS AND SUPPORT MODULE

This disclosure describes hardware for microfluidic chips and an associated support module for facilitating operation of one or more microfluidic chips. The microfluidic chips described herein are designed for supporting multiple different tissue types, including kidney tissue, liver tissue, adipose cells, and so forth. Chip geometry facilities fluid flow through one or more channels of the chip with a particular flow rate. For example, shear forces are reduced where needed to ensure proper flow rate of fluid in the channels. The chamber geometry and the geometry of the channels ensures that a desired amount of oxygen is delivered to sample cells or tissues in a controlled manner.
