A biomass containment device (BCD) and methods of measuring microbial growth or enzyme activity in the presence of insoluble substrates using the BCD is described. The BCD is compatible with microbial growth and enzyme assays, is sterilizable, is reusable, and the size can be varied to fit any container.

Cell culture apparatus and method of using the same

A cell culture apparatus comprises at least one storage space, at least one barrier, a working space, a sterilization space, and a control space. The at least one storage space comprises a container shelf, an upright track, a rotatable holder, and a light tube. The working space comprises a filling station and an inspecting station. The filling station comprises a first delivering device, an open-close device, and a filling mechanism. The inspecting station comprises a first inspecting mechanism and a second delivering device. Also provided is a method of using the cell culture apparatus including steps of filling, inspecting, or collecting cell cultures, therefore, the cell culture apparatus performs multiple cell culture processes automatically.

SYSTEMS AND METHODS FOR IMPROVED PERFORMANCE OF FLUIDIC AND MICROFLUIDIC SYSTEMS

Systems and methods for improved flow properties in fluidic and microfluidic systems are disclosed. The system includes a microfluidic device having a first microchannel, a fluid reservoir having a working fluid and a pressurized gas, a pump in communication with the fluid reservoir to maintain a desired pressure of the pressurized gas, and a fluid-resistance element located within a fluid path between the fluid reservoir and the first microchannel. The fluid-resistance element includes a first fluidic resistance that is substantially larger than a second fluidic resistance associated with the first microchannel.

FIXED-BED BIOREACTOR WITH CONSTANT-FLOW PUMP/ TUBING SYSTEM

We have modified a commercially-available adherent cell culture bioreactor in several ways to increase productivity of cultured cells, while decreasing contamination risk. We found that modifying a commercially-available adherent cell culture bioreactor to provide for slower cell culture medium flow unexpectedly and dramatically increases the productivity of the cultured adherent cells. We also developed a new sampling manifold configuration and new way of taking samples, to reduce contamination risk.

Colony contrast gathering

An imaging system and method for microbial growth detection, counting or identification. One colony may be contrasted in an image that is not optimal for another type of colony. The system and method provides contrast from all available material through space (spatial differences), time (differences appearing over time for a given capture condition) and color space transformation using image input information over time to assess whether microbial growth has occurred for a given sample.

Solid waste digestion system

A system for digesting biodigestible feed that preferably includes the steps of comminuting the feed, introducing feed, an oxygen-containing gas, an accelerant, and bacteria into a digestion zone, the bacteria being suitable for digesting the feed under aerobic, anaerobic, and anoxic conditions. The contents of the digestion zone can be changed from aerobic operation to either anoxic or anaerobic operation, or vice versa, without changing the bacteria in the digestion zone.

ORGANOMIMETIC DEVICES AND METHODS OF USE AND MANUFACTURING THEREOF

An organomimetic device includes a microfluidic device that can be used to culture cells in its microfluidic channels. The organomimetic device can be part of dynamic system that can apply mechanical forces to the cells by modulating the microfluidic device and the flow of fluid through the microfluidic channels. The membrane in the organomimetic device can be modulated mechanically via pneumatic means and/or mechanical means. The organomimetic device can be manufactured by the fabrication of individual components separately, for example, as individual layers that can be subsequently laminated together.

The present invention relates to a device and a method for inducing pluripotent cells using energy and, more specifically, has an effect of inducing new type pluripotent cells having pluripotent characteristics by applying energy such as ultrasonic waves, lasers or heat treatment to differentiated cells.

Neuronal Axon Mimetics For In Vitro Analysis Of Neurological Diseases, Myelination, And Drug Screening

Aspects of the present invention provide improved methods and apparatus for use in in vitro modeling of the interaction of cells with cellular constructs/parts/axons, including axon mimetics and use of three-dimensional fibers.

METHOD FOR DETERMINING THE VIABILITY OF CELLS

A method for determining a state of a cell, the cell being placed in a sample, in contact with a culture medium, the method comprising: illuminating the sample with a light source and acquiring an image of the sample with an image sensor, the image sensor lying in a detection plane; from the acquired image, locating a position of the cell in a plane parallel to the detection plane; the method further comprising: from the acquired image, estimating a refractive index of the cell or a relative refractive index of the cell, the relative refractive index corresponding to a refractive index of the cell relative to the refractive index of the culture medium; from the estimation of the refractive index or of the relative refractive index, determining an index of interest of the cell; from the index of interest, classifying a state of the cell among predetermined states, the predetermined states comprising at least one apoptosis state and one living state.
