High-strength gray cast iron

Disclosed herein is a gray cast iron having high strength and reduced casting defects. The high-strength gray cast iron may include: an amount of about 3.10 to 3.50 wt % of carbon (C), an amount of about 2.10 to 2.40 wt % of silicon (Si), an amount of about 0.50 to 0.80 wt % of manganese (Mn), an amount less than or equal to about 0.10 wt % (not including 0%) of phosphorus (P), an amount less than or equal to about 0.10 wt % (not including 0%) of sulfur (S), an amount of about 0.25 to 0.45 wt % of chromium (Cr), an amount of about 1.00 to 1.40 wt % of copper (Cu), an amount less than or equal to about 0.20 wt % (not including 0%) of nickel (Ni), and a balance of iron (Fe), all the wt % are based on the total weight of the gray cast iron. In particular, the gray cast iron may include a carbon equivalent (CEQ) of about 3.95 to 4.1% calculated by the Equation 1.

High-strength gray cast iron

Disclosed herein is a gray cast iron having high strength and reduced casting defects. Powder metal material for wear and temperature resistance applications

A powder metal composition for high wear and temperature applications is made by atomizing a melted iron based alloy including 3.0 to 7.0 wt. % carbon; 10.0 to 25.0 wt. % chromium; 1.0 to 5.0 wt. % tungsten; 3.5 to 7.0 wt. % vanadium; 1.0 to 5.0 wt. % molybdenum; not greater than 0.5 wt. % oxygen; and at least 40.0 wt. % iron. The high carbon content reduces the solubility of oxygen in the melt and thus lowers the oxygen content to a level below which would cause the carbide-forming elements to oxidize during atomization. The powder metal composition includes metal carbides in an amount of at least 15 vol. %. The microhardness of the powder metal composition increases with increasing amounts of carbon and is typically about 800 to 1,500 Hv50.

Carbide-based hardfacing

One aspect of the disclosure provides an iron-based hardfacing layer which includes hard or wear resistant phases resulting at least in part from dissolution of silicon and/or boron carbide particles into a liquid iron-based metal during the fabrication process. In an embodiment, the hardfacing layer is formed by a fusion welding process in which carbide particles are added to the molten weld pool. In an example, the filler metal supplied to the welding process is a mild steel. In an embodiment, the hardness as measured at the surface of the hardfacing ranges from 40 to 65 HRC. In an example, the iron-based hardfacing layer also includes tungsten carbide particles.

Carbide-based hardfacing

One aspect of the disclosure provides an iron-based hardfacing layer which includes hard or wear resistant phases resulting at least in part from dissolution of silicon and/or boron carbide particles into a liquid iron-based metal during the fabrication process. The present invention refers to a gray cast iron alloy with chemical composition especially developed to promote high hot mechanical strength and good thermal conductivity, with antimony and nitrogen contents, wherein the antimony content ranges from 0.05 to 0, 12% by weight, and the nitrogen content ranges from 0.008 to 0.013% by weight, based on the total weight of the gray cast iron alloy.
