Method and apparatus for electrochemical treatment of concrete structures affected by ASR

The present invention relates to a method for impregnating concrete with a non-aqueous electrolyte characterized in that an electric field is applied between electrodes mounted on the concrete surface and/or embedded in the concrete such that the non-aqueous electrolyte migrates into the concrete. Preferably, lithium ions are dissolved in the non-aqueous electrolyte.

Cathodic protection system monitoring

A method and system is disclosed for testing a cathodic protection system that protects a metallic structure with one or more DC power sources electrically connected to the metallic structure and an associated reference electrode. The metallic structure may be cathodically protected at multiple locations. A Cathodic Protection Waveform Monitoring Unit (CPWMU) operates independently from power cycling by the cathodic protection system to measure cathodic protection voltage levels by measuring, over one or more measurement time periods, a voltage differential between the metallic structure and its associated reference electrode, a plurality of times when power provided to the metallic structure is cycled on and off. The CPWMU includes digital storage to store values indicative of the measured voltage differentials over the measurement time period. A Cathodic Protection Waveform Reader (CPWR) that may be remotely located from any CPWMU communicates with a number of CPWMU's within communication range to obtain the values stored in the CPWMUs. The CPWR may be positioned in a variety of aircraft, vehicles or be hand carried.

Corrosion protection using a sacrificial anode

Corrosion protection of steel in concrete is provided by locating an anode assembly including both a sacrificial anode and an impressed current anode in contact with the concrete and providing an impressed current from a power supply to the anode. The impressed current anode forms a perforated sleeve surrounding a rod of the sacrificial anode material with an activated ionically-conductive filler material between. The system can be used without the power supply in sacrificial mode or when the power supply is connected, the impressed current anode can be powered to provide an impressed current system and/or to recharge the sacrificial anode from sacrificial anode corrosion products.

Break-resistant anode assemblies for cathodic protection systems and methods of installing the same

Various break-resistant anode assemblies and method of installing the same in the ground are disclosed. Each anode assembly (20) basically comprises an anode (22), at least one pulling cable (24), and a protective nose cone (26). The nose cone is a hollow member receiving the leading end (22A) of the anode and from which the anode's electrical conductor (28) extends. The nose cone includes a tapered leading surface (32) that facilitates and guides the anode assembly as it is pulled through the ground, while protecting the anode. A break-away mechanism (54) may also be provided to ensure that no more than a maximum pulling force is applied to the anode assembly during its installation to ensure that the anode is not damaged.

An automated tank Cathodic/Corrosion Protection (CCP) monitoring system includes a mobile CCP data collection device. The data collection device can be moved horizontally to different locations in the tank. A reference electrode and corrosion coupon are lowered from the data collection device to desired depths within a liquid medium in the tank to collect data. The data collection device is connected to a programmable, external control unit enabling a operator to program a data collection schedule, the horizontal and vertical distance between readings, interruption of the system if the system is designed in a way to handle interruption, and has the ability to transmit the data remotely to a control center. These capabilities enable automated, remote monitoring of the CCP system, eliminate the safety concerns associated with sending technicians onto tank roofs, and give a more accurate and complete representation of the CCP system functionality and level of protection achieved.

Sacrificial anode assembly

.[.A sacrificial anode assembly for cathodically protecting and/or passivating a metal section, comprising: (a) a cell, which has an anode and a cathode arranged so as to not be in electronic contact with each other but so as to be in ionic contact with each other such that current can flow between the anode and the cathode; (b) a connector attached to the anode of the cell for electrically connecting the anode to the metal section to be cathodically protected; and (c) a sacrificial anode electrically connected in series with the cathode of the cell; wherein the cell is otherwise isolated from the environment such that current can only flow into and out of the cell via the sacrificial anode and the connector. The invention also provides a method of cathodically protecting metal in which such a sacrificial anode assembly is cathodically attached to the metal via the connector of the assembly, and a reinforced concrete structure wherein some or all of the reinforcement is cathodically protected by such a method..]. .Iadd.A sacrificial anode assembly for cathodically protecting and/or passivating a metal section, includes a cell with an anode and a cathode, a connector attached to the anode of the cell for electrically connecting the anode to the metal section to be cathodically protected; and a sacrificial anode electrically connected in series with the cathode of the cell.
