The presently disclosed concepts relate to improved techniques for alkali metal extraction (and in particular lithium), using a solid electrolyte membrane. By using a solid electrolyte embedded in a matrix, alkali metal (such as lithium) can be more effectively separated from feed solutions. Additionally, energy used to initially extract lithium from a feed solution may be stored as electrochemical energy, which in turn, may be discharged when lithium is depleted from the electrode. This discharged energy may therefore be reclaimed and reused to extract additional lithium.

REDOX MEMBRANES FOR LITHIUM EXTRACTION

An apparatus, system and redox membrane for efficient lithium-ion extraction from natural salt waters or geothermal brines or manmade sources such as from lithium battery recycling are provided. The redox membrane is selective for lithium ions over other spectator ions making the system capable of selectively extracting lithium-ions from multiple-ion source solutions. The system uses the redox membrane as an electrochemically active material acting as a Li-selective membrane for direct lithium extraction from a lithium-ion source. The redox membrane is also not porous to solvents and is stable in caustic and high temperature environments. The features of the redox membrane and system allow the recovery of lithium from low purity sources and the production of higher purity products at reduced costs and process steps over conventional processes.

Methods and systems for producing are disclosed. A method for producing iron, for example, comprises: providing an iron-containing ore to a dissolution subsystem comprising a first electrochemical cell; wherein the first anolyte has a different composition than the first catholyte; dissolving at least a portion of the iron-containing ore using an acid to form an acidic iron-salt solution having dissolved first Fe.sup.3+ ions; providing at least a portion of the acidic iron-salt solution to the first cathodic chamber; first electrochemically reducing said first Fe.sup.3+ ions in the first catholyte to form Fe.sup.2+ ions; transferring the formed Fe.sup.2+ ions from the dissolution subsystem to an iron-plating subsystem having a second electrochemical cell; second electrochemically reducing a first portion of the transferred formed Fe.sup.2+ ions to Fe metal at a second cathode of the second electrochemical cell; and removing the Fe metal.

Methods and systems for producing are disclosed. Ore dissolution and iron conversion system

Methods and systems for dissolving an iron-containing ore are disclosed. For example, a method of processing and dissolving an iron-containing ore comprises: thermally reducing one or more non-magnetite iron oxide materials in the iron-containing ore to form magnetite in the presence of a reductant, thereby forming thermally-reduced ore; and dissolving at least a portion of the thermally-reduced ore using an acid to form an acidic iron-salt solution; wherein the acidic iron-salt solution comprises protons electrochemically generated in an electrochemical cell.

Li recovery processes and onsite chemical production for Li recovery processes

In this disclosure, a process of recycling acid, base and the salt reagents required in the Li recovery process is introduced. A membrane electrolysis cell which incorporates an oxygen depolarized cathode is implemented to generate the required chemicals onsite. The system can utilize a portion of the salar brine or other lithium-containing brine or solid waste to generate hydrochloric or sulfuric acid, sodium hydroxide and carbonate salts. Simultaneous generation of acid and base allows for taking advantage of both chemicals during the conventional Li recovery from brines and mineral rocks. The desalinated water can also be used for the washing steps on the recovery process or returned into the evaporation ponds. The method also can be used for the direct conversion of lithium salts to the high value LiOH product. The method does not produce any solid effluent which makes it easy-to-adopt for use in existing industrial Li recovery plants.

Method for cleanly extracting metallic silver

A method for cleanly extracting metallic silver includes: mixing an acidic solution containing Ce.sup.4+ and NO.sub.3.sup.− with a silver-containing material for leaching; after the leaching is completed, carrying out a solid-liquid separation to obtain a leaching solution containing Ce.sup.3+ and Ag.sup.+; and electrolyzing the leaching solution, wherein an oxidation reaction of Ce.sup.3+ occurs at an anode to realize a regeneration of Ce.sup.4+ and an electrolytic reduction occurs at a cathode to reduce Ag.sup.+ to obtain the metallic silver. Ce.sup.4+ is used as a leaching agent and an intermediate oxidant to implement a cyclic operation of solution leaching and electrolytic regeneration on the silver-containing material. Almost no NO.sub.x and waste liquid are caused by the extraction process, and the invention is clean and environmentally friendly.
