The present invention provides a method of making a metallic shield for shielding an edge of a component e.g. an aerofoil component such as a gas turbine blade or vane. The method comprises: providing a mandrel with a mandrel edge having a shape conforming to the shape of the component edge, wherein the mandrel edge comprises a surface having a width, W1; providing a metal wire having a substantially triangular radial cross-section with a base surface of width W2, wherein W2 equals W1; aligning and affixing the base surface of the wire on the surface of the mandrel edge; electro-depositing metal onto the mandrel and metal wire to form the metallic shield comprising the deposited metal and the metal wire; and removing the metallic shield from the mandrel.

Electroformed sheath

An electroformed sheath for protecting an airfoil includes a sheath body and a mandrel insert is provided. The sheath body includes a leading edge. The sheath body includes a pressure side wall and an opposed suction side wall, which side walls meet at the leading edge and extend away from the leading edge to define a cavity between the side walls. The sheath body includes a head section between the leading edge and the cavity. The mandrel insert is positioned between the pressure side and suction side walls, and includes a generally wedge-shaped geometry. A method for protecting an airfoil includes: 1) securing a mandrel insert to a mandrel; 2) electroplating a sheath body onto the mandrel and the mandrel insert; 3) removing the mandrel from the sheath body so that a sheath cavity is defined within the sheath body; and 4) securing the airfoil within the sheath cavity.

OGV ELECTROFORMED HEAT EXCHANGERS

A gas turbine engine guide vane heat exchanger has guide vane heat exchanger including electroformed fluid channels in electroformed heat exchanger tubes or a heat exchanger core disposed within airfoil. Non-flammable heat conducting liquid or non-metallic foam may fill space between tubes or core and airfoil. Fluid circuit may include channels within electroformed heat exchanger tubes or the heat exchanger core and extend from inlet manifold to outlet manifold for directing fluid or oil through channels and include fluid or oil supply inlet connected to inlet manifold for receiving the fluid or oil flowed into inlet manifold and a fluid or oil supply outlet connected to fluid or oil supply outlet for discharging fluid or oil flowed out of fluid or oil outlet manifold. Heat exchanger tubes or heat exchanger core, inlet manifold, outlet manifold, supply inlet and supply outlet may be integrally and monolithically electroformed together.

MANDREL FOR ELECTROFORMING

An apparatus and method for a mandrel used during an electroforming process. The mandrel is formed of a structural wax and includes a metallic layer utilized to formulate a metal component. During the electroforming process, the mandrel is actively cooled utilizing a closed loop. The closed loop includes the mandrel and a heat exchanger through which a coolant flows.

A method of forming a strut includes providing a ring with a threaded section, coupling a mandrel to the ring, and electroforming a metallic layer over the mandrel and ring. The strut can include an integral monolithic body.
