The cartridge includes a rigid or resilient upper base (312) having a convex or flat top surface (314) upon which the lip balm is associated, and a volume of lip balm attached to the top surface of the base. The flat or convex top surface allows wiping the balm onto the lips single-handedly. The top surface of the cartridge includes a plurality of integrally-attached bristles (330, 332), between which the lip balm is embedded, anchoring the lip balm to the cartridge. and providing the additional function of exfoliation.

Cosmetics packaging and applicators including a gel based tip are described. Gel applicators may or may not be provided with a through-hole. In various embodiments, the gel may be a stand-alone gel or may be encapsulated in a membrane. The gel applicator provides a soft feel and may have cooling effect as well. Approaches for manufacturing an applicator and corresponding applicators for applying a cosmetic substance are provided that may include forming an applicator body, an applicator head, and a detachable shield. The applicator body includes a first end and a second end. The applicator head is operably coupled with the first end of the applicator body and includes an outer surface. The detachable shield being removably coupled with the applicator head. The outer surface of the applicator head is segmented into an exposed portion outside of the detachable shield and a shielded portion within the detachable shield. The approach further includes applying a surface treatment to the outer surface of the applicator head and removing the detachable shield from the applicator head. Upon removing the detachable shield, the shielded portion is free of the surface treatment.

A cosmetic application device includes an application member and a positioning support system therefore which provides improved accuracy and side-to-side repeatability for the application of a cosmetic. The application member is optionally adjustable and repositionable relative to the positioning support system and may be further optionally provided in a kit form with one or more colorant members, guide members or replacement application members.
