The system may include an electrolysis unit configured to be powered by the zero-CO2 emissions electricity generated by the molten salt reactor and generate hydrogen (H.sub.2) and oxygen (O.sub.2) from the desalinated water. The system may include an oxy-combustion unit configured to receive and combust a hydrocarbon fuel with the O.sub.2 from the electrolysis unit to produce electricity and CO.sub.2. The system may include a CO.sub.2 capture system adapted to capture the CO.sub.2 produced by the oxy-combustion unit and a catalytic hydrogenation unit configured to receive and convert H.sub.2 from the electrolysis unit and CO.sub.2 from the CO.sub.2 capture system to produce the hydrocarbon fuel.

The present invention includes a method for converting renewable energy source electricity and a hydrocarbon feedstock into a liquid fuel by providing a source of renewable electrical energy in communication with a synthesis gas generation unit and an air separation unit. Oxygen from the air separation unit and a hydrocarbon feedstock is provided to the synthesis gas generation unit, thereby causing partial oxidation reactions in the synthesis gas generation unit in a process that converts the hydrocarbon feedstock into synthesis gas. The synthesis gas is then converted into a liquid fuel.

Hydrogen-fueled gas turbine power system comprising a compressor (22), a combustor (24) and a turbine (26) as well as a fuel supply device (10). The fuel supply device (10) has the form of a hydrogen gas producing reactor system with at least one reactor (12) based on sorption enhanced steam methane reforming (SE-SMR) and/or sorption enhanced water gas shift (SE-WGS) of syngas The reactor (12) is connected in a closed loop with a regenerator (14) for circulating and regenerating a CO.sub.2 absorber between the reactor (12) and the regenerator (14). Additionally, there is a closed heat exchange loop (21) between the regenerator (14) of the hydrogen gas producing reactor system (10) and the downstream end of the combustor (24) or the upstream end of the turbine (26). A method of its use is also contemplated.

Systems For Producing Chemicals And Fuels Having An Optimized Carbon Footprint

Chemical production systems which allow for an optimized carbon footprint are presented. Plasma-based reforming systems may provide a viable alternative to standard chemical production techniques, such systems can reduce the carbon footprint of the chemicals produced. Example systems include the production of synthesis gas (syngas), hydrogen, synthetic hydrocarbon fuels, ammonia, and urea. Reducing the carbon footprint of chemicals such as these is of vital importance to reducing the environmental impact of industries such as transportation and agriculture. In many of the embodiments a secondary product is produced, the sale of this secondary product may make the primary low-carbon footprint chemical more economical. In many cases the secondary product is carbon, methods of sequestering this carbon via reverse mining and enhanced oil and gas recovery are presented.

A method of direct reduction of iron (DRI) is disclosed, the method comprising generating metallic iron by removing oxygen from iron ore using a reducing gaseous mixture with excess carbon monoxide that produces an excess CO.sub.2 by-product is provided. The system comprises (a) a feed stream comprising methane, water, and carbon dioxide; (b) a reformer reactor capable of reacting the feed stream to form a syngas mixture comprising hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide; (c) a methanol reactor capable of reacting the syngas mixture to form biomethanol product; (d) a wash column comprising the syngas mixture and the biomethanol product, wherein the biomethanol product is capable of absorbing carbon dioxide from the syngas mixture; and (e) a flash column comprising a vent capable of venting the absorbed carbon dioxide. A method for removing carbon dioxide from a biomethanol production system is also provided.

An integrated process for the production of a useful liquid hydrocarbon product comprises: feeding a gasification zone with an oxygen-containing feed and a first carbonaceous feedstock comprising waste materials and/or biomass, gasifying the first carbonaceous feedstock in the gasification zone to produce first synthesis gas, partially oxidising the first synthesis gas in a partial oxidation zone to generate partially oxidised synthesis gas, combining at least a portion of the first synthesis gas and/or the partially oxidised synthesis gas and at least a portion of electrolysis hydrogen obtained from an electrolyser in an amount to achieve the desired hydrogen to carbon monoxide molar ratio of from about 1.5:1 to about 2.5:1, and to generate a blended synthesis gas, wherein the electrolyser operates using green electricity; and subjecting at least a portion of the blended synthesis gas to a conversion process effective to produce the liquid hydrocarbon product.
