Fabric reinforced with carbon nanostructures to improve mechanical performance
Fabrics that have unique mechanical properties are comprised of fibers that have been reacted to provide carbon nanostructures covalently grafted to these fibers so that the entanglement and/or the reactive bonding between adjacent fibers creates a hierarchal structure reinforcement of the fabric. This entanglement and/or reactivity is also effective for developing reinforcement between plies of structural fabric composites in order to enhance inter-laminar shear strength and mechanical properties.
Method for making mesoporous magnesium hydroxide nanoplates, an antibacterial composition, and a method of reducing nitroaromatic compounds
A method for producing mesoporous magnesium hydroxide nanoplates involving solvothermal treatment of a solution of a magnesium salt, a base, a glycol, and water is disclosed. The method does not use a surfactant or template in the solvothermal treatment. The method yields mesoporous nanoparticles of magnesium hydroxide having a plate-like morphology with a diameter of 20 nm to 100 nm, a mean pore diameter of 2 to 10 nm, a surface area of 50 to 70 m.sup.2/g, and a type-III nitrogen adsorption-desorption BET isotherm with a H3 hysteresis loop. An antibacterial composition containing the mesoporous magnesium hydroxide nanoplates is also disclosed. A method for reducing nitroaromatic compounds with a reducing agent and the mesoporous magnesium hydroxide nanoplates as a catalyst is also disclosed.
Functionalized graphene and epoxy composite
A polymer composite formed from an epoxy based polymer and an amino-graphene. The epoxy based polymer forms a polymer matrix and the amino graphene is dispersed throughout the polymer matrix. Further, a graphene is functionalized with 3,5-dinitrophenyl groups to form functionalized graphene and one or more amine functional groups form Meisenheimer complexes with the functionalized graphene to form the amino-graphene. An associated method of making the polymer composite is also provided.
