A method of generating hydrogen gas includes providing a colony of sulfur-reducing bacteria and a colony of sulfur-oxidizing bacteria. The colonies can be submerged in a body of water. The colony of sulfur-reducing bacteria can be used to convert at least a portion of sulfates present in the body of water to hydrogen sulfide. The colony of sulfur-oxidizing bacteria can be used to convert the hydrogen sulfide to sulfuric acid. The sulfuric acid can react with manganese to produce hydrogen gas and manganese sulfate.

A method of separating oxygen from a body of water includes providing a colony of denitrifying bacteria submerged in the body of water. The colony of denitrifying bacteria can be used to convert at least a portion of nitrogen oxides present in the body of water to nitrogen gas. The method can also include collecting the nitrogen gas and bubbling the nitrogen gas through a portion of water from the body of water to remove dissolved oxygen from the portion of water. This can form a mixture of the nitrogen gas and oxygen gas.

In some aspects, a system includes a manifold structure including one or more opening to flow air out of an interior of the manifold structure; one or more support structures connected to the manifold structure, in which the one or more support structures are floatable on a surface of a fluid that includes water or a wastewater; and an air source that flows air to the manifold structure, such that the manifold structure supplies the air containing a predetermined amount of oxygen (e.g., less than 0.1 mg/L of oxygen) to oxidize sulfide of the fluid.

The present invention relates to a process for the treatment of industrial alkaline streams comprising sulfide and carbonate, comprising the steps of: a) providing an industrial alkaline stream comprising sulfide and carbonate; b) supplying the industrial alkaline stream to a bioreactor comprising sulfide oxidizing bacteria and removing sulfide from the industrial alkaline stream by subjecting said stream to sulfide oxidizing bacteria in the presence of oxygen, and supplying a pH adjustment agent to the bioreactor to maintain a pH in the range in the range 8 to 11, to oxidize the sulfide to elemental sulfur, c) withdrawing from the bioreactor a treated industrial alkaline stream comprising elemental sulfur, wherein a portion of the sulfide oxidizing bacteria is removed from the bioreactor and mixed with the industrial alkaline stream prior to supplying the industrial alkaline stream to the bioreactor in step b).
