TRANSPARENT CERAMICS FABRICATED BY MATERIAL JET PRINTING
A method for forming a transparent ceramic, in accordance with one embodiment, includes forming a green body by material jetting an ink, and processing the green body to form the ceramic to transparency. A product, in accordance with one embodiment, includes an ink for forming a transparent ceramic. The ink is physically characterized as having a density, surface tension, and viscosity configured to enable material jetting of the ink in contained, sequential droplets having a volume in the range of about 1 picoliter to about 1 nanoliter when jetted from a nozzle having an inner diameter in the range of about 10 microns to about 300 microns. A product, in accordance with another embodiment, includes a transparent ceramic, at least a portion of the transparent ceramic having layers of less than 50 microns per layer with physical characteristics of formation by material jetting.
Strongly scattering ceramic converter and method for producing same
A strongly scattering optoceramic converter material having a density of less than 97% is provided, as well as a method for producing such an optoceramic material. By appropriately choosing in particular the composition, blending method, and sintering conditions, the production method permits to produce converter materials with tailored properties.
SINTERED BODY FOR RADIATION SHIELDING MATERIAL, RADIATION SHIELDING MATERIAL, AND METHOD FOR PRODUCING THE SAME
As a sintered body for a radiation shielding material, which can effectively shield mainly low-energy-level neutrons, that is, thermal neutrons and lower, slow neutrons, and has excellent physical properties such as bending strength and Vickers hardness, leading to high machining strength, a sintered body for a radiation shielding material comprising LiF ranging between 99 wt. % to 5 wt. %, and one or more fluorides selected from among MgF.sub.2, CaF.sub.2, AlF.sub.3, KF, NaF, and/or YF.sub.3 ranging between 1 wt. % to 95 wt. %, having physical properties of a relative density of 92% or more, a bending strength of 50 MPa or more, and a Vickers hardness of 100 or more, is provided.

HIGH TEMPERATURE COMPOSITES AND METHODS FOR PREPARING HIGH TEMPERATURE COMPOSITES
A method for making a carbon carbon, carbon ceramic matrix, or carbon silica composite, comprising melt processing a resin comprising a polyaryletherketone (PAEK) and at least one reinforcing additive to make a precursor part, pyrolyzing the precursor part to make a pyrolyzed part, infusing a liquid second resin into the pyrolyzed part to make an infused part, and pyrolyzing the infused part. Other methods comprise processing aligned reinforcing additives and a resin comprising a PAEK to make an aligned reinforcing additives PAEK, aligned 1-2 dimensional flake material, or aligned 1-2 dimensional platelet material, to create a fabric, prepreg or tape comprising the aligned reinforcing additives and impregnated PAEK. Other methods comprise impregnating continuous fiber tape or fabric with a resin comprising PAEK and at least one reinforcing additive or co-weaving a continuous fiber or fabric with a PAEK fiber comprising PAEK and at least one reinforcing additive.
Fabrication of high heat capacity ceramic matrix composite aircraft brakes using spark plasma sintering
A method of fabricating a brake component made from a ceramic matrix composite is disclosed. In various embodiments, the method includes infiltrating a carbon fabric with a slurry containing a ceramic powder and a sintering aid; laying up the carbon fabric in a desired geometry to form a raw component; warm pressing the raw component to form a green component; and sintering the green component via a spark plasma sintering process to form a sintered component.
METHOD FOR SELECTIVE PHASE REMOVAL IN A NANOCOMPOSITE
A method of selectively removing at least part of a first phase from a surface of a nanocomposite includes at least a first phase and a second phase, each phase having a respective threshold fluence under a given number of applied laser pulses for removal of the phase by laser ablation. The threshold fluence of the first phase is less than the threshold fluence of the second phase. The method includes irradiating the surface of the nanocomposite with a laser beam having a laser beam diameter, a laser pulse duration, and a laser pulse energy during the irradiation. The laser fluence during the irradiation is less than the threshold fluence of the second phase and greater than the threshold fluence of the first phase. The laser beam diameter is greater than an average grain size of the first phase at the surface of the nanocomposite.
METHOD FOR PRODUCING COMPOSITE BODY
Provided is a method for manufacturing a composite body, the method including: a nitriding step of firing a boron carbide powder in a nitrogen atmosphere to obtain a fired product containing boron carbonitride; a sintering step of molding and heating a blend containing the fired product and a sintering aid to obtain a boron nitride sintered body including boron nitride particles and pores; and an impregnating step of impregnating the boron nitride sintered body with a resin composition, the composite body having the boron nitride sintered body and a resin filled in at least some of the pores of the boron nitride sintered body.
