In an embodiment the method includes providing at least four functional layers, each being a green body or a ceramic, wherein first functional layer is formed as a first luminous layer comprising an oxide and configured to at least partially convert light of a first wavelength range into light of a second wavelength range, wherein a second functional layer is formed as a second luminous layer comprising a nitride and configured to at least partially convert light of the first wavelength range into light of a third wavelength range, wherein a third functional layer is formed as a first intermediate layer, wherein the first intermediate layer comprises an oxide, wherein a fourth functional layer is formed as a second intermediate layer, and wherein the second intermediate layer comprises a nitride or an oxynitride.

A nuclear reactor fuel rod is a fuel rod for a light-water reactor. The nuclear reactor fuel rod includes a fuel cladding tube and an end plug, both of which are formed of a silicon carbide material. A bonding portion between the fuel cladding tube and the end plug is formed by brazing with a predetermined metal bonding material interposed, and/or by diffusion bonding. The predetermined metal bonding material has a solidus temperature of 1200° C. or higher. An outer surface of the bonding portion, and a portion of an outer surface of the fuel cladding tube and the end plug, which is adjacent to the outer surface of the bonding portion are covered by bonding-portion coating formed of a predetermined coating metal. The predetermined metal bonding material and the predetermined coating metal have an average linear expansion coefficient which is less than 10 ppm/K.

A method according to the invention for producing a connection between two surfaces or surface sections of two ceramic parts comprises: provision of a first ceramic part and of a second ceramic part; provision of an active brazing solder material on at least one surface section of at least one of the ceramic parts; and heating the active brazing solder in a vacuum brazing process. The whole active brazing solder material is provided for connecting the first and the second ceramic part by a sputtering method, wherein at least one surface section of at least one of the ceramic parts, preferably of the two ceramic parts, is layered with a layer sequence of individual components of the active brazing solder material, wherein the average strength of the layers of an individual component of the active brazing solder is no more than 0.5%, in particular not more than 0.2%, preferably not more than 0.1% and especially preferably not more than 0.05% of the strength of the joining region.

An interconnected corrugated carbon-based network comprising a plurality of expanded and interconnected carbon layers is disclosed. In one embodiment, each of the expanded and interconnected carbon layers is made up of at least one corrugated carbon sheet that is one atom thick. In another embodiment, each of the expanded and interconnected carbon layers is made up of a plurality of corrugated carbon sheets that are each one atom thick. A method of joining a metal-ceramic substrate having metallization on at least one side to a metal body by using metal alloy is disclosed. The metal body has a thickness of less than 1.0 mm and the metal alloy contains aluminum and has a liquidus temperature of greater than 450° C. The resulting metal-ceramic module provides a strong bond between the metal body and the ceramic substrate. The resulting module is useful as a circuit carrier in electronic appliances, with the metal body preferably functioning as a cooling body.

A method is described for assembling at least two parts made of silicon carbide based materials by non-reactive brazing in an oxidizing atmosphere, each of the parts comprising a surface to be assembled, wherein the parts are placed in contact with a non-reactive brazing composition, the assembly formed by the parts and the brazing composition is heated to a brazing temperature sufficient for completely or at least partially melting the brazing composition, or rendering the brazing composition viscous, and the parts and the brazing composition are cooled so as to form, after cooling the latter to ambient temperature, a moderately refractory joint. The non-reactive brazing composition is a composition A consisting of silica (SiO.sub.2), alumina (Al.sub.2O.sub.3), and calcium oxide (CaO), or a composition B consisting of alumina (Al.sub.2O.sub.3), calcium oxide (CaO), and magnesium oxide (MgO), and, before heating the assembly formed by the parts and the brazing composition to the brazing temperature, a supply of silicon in a non-oxidized form is carried out on the surfaces to be assembled of the parts to be assembled, and/or on the surface layers comprising the surfaces to be assembled of the parts to be assembled, and/or in the brazing composition.

Mullite sintered body, method for producing the same, and composite substrate

A mullite sintered body according to the present invention has an impurity element content of 1% by mass or less and contains sintered mullite grains having an average grain size of 8 μm or less. When a surface of the mullite sintered body is finished by polishing, pores in the surface have an average largest pore length of 0.4 μm or less. The surface preferably has a center line average surface roughness (Ra) of 3 nm or less. The surface preferably has a maximum peak height (Rp) of 30 nm or less. The number of pores in the surface is preferably 10 or less per unit area of 4 μm×4 μm.

JOINED BODY AND METHOD FOR PRODUCING JOINED BODY

A joined body 10 includes a ceramic body 12, a metal member 14, and a joint portion 15 that joins the ceramic body 12 and the metal member 14 together. The joint portion 15 includes a first joint layer 16 joined to the ceramic body 12 and a second joint layer 18 joined to the metal member 14. The first joint layer 16 is disposed on the ceramic body 12 side and contains an alloy that contains Fe and Cr as main components, and a compound having a thermal expansion coefficient of 4.0×10.sup.−6 (/° C.) or lower is dispersed in the first joint layer 16. The second joint layer 18 is disposed on the metal member 14 side, contains an alloy that contains Fe and Cr as main components, and has a larger thermal expansion coefficient than the first joint layer 16.
