The present application discloses methods for the efficient preparation of high purity compounds of the Formula I, and their methods of use. ##STR00001## Also disclosed herein are pharmaceutical compositions comprising a therapeutically effective amount of a menaquinol compound as disclosed above, or a mixture thereof, and a pharmaceutically acceptable excipient, wherein the composition is effective for the treatment of a condition associated with vitamin K selected from for the treatment of osteoporosis and arteriosclerosis.

The present disclosure further discloses novel intermediates useful in the synthesis of stereospecific Vitamin K2-7. Compounds of the Vitamin K2 group obtained are crystalline and exhibit well defined melting points.

In one embodiment a process for the preparation of a compound of formula (I) ##STR00001## is defined including a step in which (i) a compound of formula (II) is reacted with a compound of formula (III) ##STR00002## wherein R is an alkyl group; LG is a leaving group; m is an integer from 0 to 8; n is an integer of from 0 to 9; and X is hydrogen, halide, hydroxyl or protected hydroxyl; in the presence of a copper, nickel or palladium catalyst.
