A process includes reacting, in a reactor having a fixed bed containing a solid catalyst which contains a heterogeneous ion exchange resin, hydrogen sulfide and ethylene oxide in the presence of the solid catalyst to yield a reaction product which contains beta-mercaptoethanol. A reactor system includes the reactor, an ethylene oxide stream, a hydrogen sulfide stream, a fixed bed containing the solid catalyst placed in the reactor, and an effluent stream containing the reaction product. During steady state operation of the reactor in the process and the reactor system, the hydrogen sulfide and the ethylene oxide are present in a mole ratio in a range of about 9:1 to about 20:1.

The invention relates to a method for synthesising a mercaptan from a terminal olefin and hydrogen sulphide which comprises the following consecutive steps: Acatalytic addition of hydrogen sulphide to a terminal olefin catalysed by an acid catalyst; Bseparation of the products of the addition reaction into a light fraction including the surplus hydrogen sulphide and the olefins, and into a heavy fraction including at least one mercaptan and optionally one or more thioethers; Ca finishing step of passing the light fraction obtained in step B over an acid catalyst; then Dseparation of the products of the finishing step into a fraction that is rich in hydrogen sulphide and into a fraction that is rich in additives; and finally Erecirculation of the fraction that is rich in hydrogen sulphide to the catalytic addition step A. The invention also relates to the facility for implementing said method.

Process for the Production of Specialty Mercaptans From the C4 Oligomerization Product

The present invention relates to a process for the production of specialty mercaptans from C.sub.4 oligomerization product. The oligomer product from the commercial C.sub.4 oligomerization process is separated in desired fractions of C.sub.8 and C.sub.12 olefins and these streams are further used as feed stock for the production of the specialty mercaptans such as tert octyl mercaptan (TOM) & tert dodecyl mercaptan (TDM). These fractionated oligomer stream (C.sub.8 and C.sub.12) from the C.sub.4 oligomerization process reacts with hydrogen sulfide in presence of pretreated cation exchange resin catalyst using appropriate inhibitors such as amine precursors, nitriles and metals to produce respective sulfur compounds tert-octyl mercaptan (TOM) and tert dodecyl mercaptan (TDM).
