Organic electroluminescent materials and devices comprising benzimidazole-containing metal complexes

A compound comprising a first ligand L.sub.A of Formula I or Formula II: ##STR00001## wherein A.sup.1 and A.sup.2 are each independently C or Si; wherein each R.sup.A, and R.sup.B independently represents mono to the maximum allowable substitution, or no substitution; wherein each X.sup.1, X.sup.2, and X.sup.3 is independently C or N; wherein each R, R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, R.sup.4 and R.sup.A is independently a hydrogen or a substituent selected from the group consisting of deuterium, halogen, alkyl, cycloalkyl, heteroalkyl, heterocycloalkyl, arylalkyl, alkoxy, aryloxy, amino, silyl, boryl, alkenyl, cycloalkenyl, heteroalkenyl, alkynyl, aryl, heteroaryl, acyl, carboxylic acid, ether, ester, nitrile, isonitrile, sulfanyl, sulfinyl, sulfonyl, phosphino, and combinations thereof; wherein L.sub.A is complexed to a metal M; wherein M is optionally coordinated to one or more other ligands; wherein the ligand L.sub.A is optionally linked with the one or more other ligands to form a tridentate, tetradentate, pentadentate, or hexadentate ligand; and wherein any two substituents are optionally joined or fused together to form a ring.

ORGANIC ELECTROLUMINESCENT MATERIALS AND DEVICES

According to an aspect of the present disclosure, a compound having a metal planar tetradentate coordination configuration is disclosed. In the compounds, the metal M is Pt or Pd; the four coordinating atoms are Z.sup.1, Z.sup.2, Z.sup.3, and Z.sup.4 and are each selected from N, C, and O. The compound includes a substituent R, and atoms M, Z.sup.1, Z.sup.2, Z.sup.3, and Z.sup.4 are used to define a first plane that passes through the metal M and is positioned to have a minimum sum of shortest distances with Z.sup.1, Z.sup.2, Z.sup.3, and Z.sup.4. At least one non-hydrogen atom in R falls within a distal circle of a cylinder extending perpendicular to the first plane, where the distal circle of the cylinder is a height h from the base circle and the height h ranges from 3.3 Å to 4.8 Å.

The present disclosure provides, in part, a new class of highly active Pd(II)-NHC complexes bearing anilines as throw-away ligands. These catalysts are well-defined, air- and moisture-stable, and can be easily purified by chromatographic techniques. High activity and generality has been exemplified in the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling by C—N, C—O and C—Cl cleavage. Facile syntheses of these catalysts is also described.

These novel metal complexes can be used in electroluminescent device, and show more excellent performance, for example, they can reduce the driving voltage and full width at half maximum, obtain more saturated light emission, improve the efficiency and the lifetime of the device, and finally, it can improve the comprehensive performance of the device significantly.
