Provided is a compound that can be used for a resin for a resist having excellent sensitivity, resolution, and etching resistance, or the like, by a compound represented by the following formula (1):

The liquid crystal display device of the present invention includes paired substrates and a liquid crystal layer provided between the paired substrates. At least one of the paired substrates includes a retardation layer formed from a polymer of at least one type of monomer. The at least one type of monomer includes a photo-aligning monomer that is to be aligned by polarized light.

An ophthalmic device is disclosed that is a polymerization product of a monomeric mixture comprising: (a) a major amount of one or more non-silicone-containing hydrophilic monomers; (b) a crosslinking agent mixture comprising (i) one or more first crosslinking agents containing at least two ethylenically unsaturated reactive end groups, wherein the at least two ethylenically unsaturated reactive end groups are (meth)acrylate-containing reactive end groups and (ii) one or more second crosslinking agents containing at least two ethylenically unsaturated reactive end groups wherein at least one of the ethylenically unsaturated reactive end groups is a non-(meth)acrylate reactive end group, and (c) one or more hydrophilic polymers or copolymers comprising one or more hydrophilic units and a thio carbonyl thio fragment of a reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) agent wherein the ophthalmic device has an equilibrium water content of at least about 45 weight percent.

OPHTHALMIC DEVICES

An ophthalmic device is disclosed that is a polymerization product of a monomeric mixture comprising: (a) a major amount of one or more non-silicone-containing hydrophilic monomers; (b) a crosslinking agent mixture comprising (i) one or more first crosslinking agents containing at least two ethylenically unsaturated reactive end groups, wherein the at least two ethylenically unsaturated reactive end groups are (meth)acrylate-containing reactive end groups and (ii) one or more second crosslinking agents containing at least two ethylenically unsaturated reactive end groups wherein at least one of the ethylenically unsaturated reactive end groups is a non-(meth)acrylate reactive end group, and (c) one or more hydrophilic polymers or copolymers comprising one or more hydrophilic units and a thio carbonyl thio fragment of a reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) agent wherein the ophthalmic device has an equilibrium water content of at least about 45 weight percent.

The present invention provides a new polymerizable compound which is represented by Formula (I). In the formula, R.sup.1 indicates an alkyl group or the like, A represents a (m+n)valent cyclic group, L.sub.1 indicates a single bond or the like, L.sub.2 indicates COO or the like, Z indicates COO or the like, Sp indicates an alkylene group, an alkyleneoxy group, or the like, Q indicates a polymerizable group such as a (meth)acryloyl groups, 1 indicates an integer of 0 to 2, m indicates an integer of 1 or 2, and n indicates an integer of 1 to 3. The present invention also provides a polymerizable composition which includes the polymerizable compound described above, a film which is formed from the polymerizable composition described above, and a half mirror for displaying a projection image which includes the film described above. Using the polymerization composition described above, it is possible to manufacture films such as a low birefringence retardation film and a reflection film with high reflection wavelength region selectivity. ##STR00001##
