MODIFIED FLUOROPOLYMERS

The invention relates to fluoropolymers that have been modified with low molecular weight, polymeric chain transfer agents, and uses of the modified fluoropolymers. The modified fluoropolymers provide enhanced properties to the fluoropolymer, such as increased adhesion, and hydrophilic characteristics. The modified functional fluoropolymers are useful in many applications, including as binders in electrode-forming compositions and separator compositions, for hydrophilic membranes and hollow fiber membranes, as an aqueous and a solvent cast coating for baked decorative and protective coatings, and as a tie layer between a fluoropolymer layer and an incompatible polymer layer.

PVDF POWDER FOR LIQUID SLURRIES
20180056247 · 2018-03-01 ·

The invention relates to polymer powders, preferably fluoropolymer powders such as polyvinylidene fluoride (such as Kynar resins from Arkema Inc.), polyvinyl fluoride, and poly-ethylene-co-chlorotrifluoroethylene, useful for a high-solids liquid slurry. The PVDF has a narrow average particle size of from 20 to 100 microns, with less than 20 weight percent of particles outside this range. This powder can be used to form slurries having from 30 to 60 weight percent solids, the liquid slurries formed being free-flowing. The free-flowing slurries are useful in forming membranes in a thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) process.

HIGH MELT FLOW FLUOROPOLYMER COMPOSITION

The invention relates to very high melt flow fluoropolymer compositions, having low melt viscosities. The fluoropolymers have low molecular weights of from 5 kDa to 200 kDa and melt viscosities of less than 2 kilopoise (kP) at 232 C. and 100 s.sup.1. One use for the high melt flow fluoropolymers is in the formation of very small diameters fibers, useful for melt-blown non-woven materials. Fiber diameters of less than 9 microns, and preferably 500 to 2000 nm can be produced.

ADHESIVE, ELECTRODE COMPOSITION, AND ELECTRODE

An adhesive of the present invention satisfies the following requirements: the turbidity is 5.0 or less; the dissolution rate of the adhesive is 10% or more and 70% or less; the logarithmic viscosity number of a dissolved component of an adhesive solution is 0.5 dL/g or more and less than 2.5 dL/g; A1735 cm.sup.1/A3025 cm.sup.1 of the dissolved component of the adhesive solution is 0.20 or more and 0.80 or less; and the logarithmic viscosity number of the adhesive is greater than that of the dissolved component of the adhesive solution.
