CARBOXY-FUNCTIONAL, POLYETHER-BASED REACTION PRODUCTS AND AQUEOUS BASECOAT MATERIALS COMPRISING THE REACTION PRODUCTS

The present invention relates to a pigmented aqueous basecoat material comprising a polyether-based reaction product which is preparable by reaction of (a) at least one cyclic carboxylic anhydride comprising a free carboxylic acid group and/or the halide of a carboxylic acid group with

(b) at least one polyether of the general structural formula (I)

in which

R is a C.sub.3 to C.sub.6 alkylene radical and n is selected accordingly such that the polyether (b) possesses a number-average molecular weight of 800 to 4000 g/mol, the components (a) and (b) being used in the reaction in a molar ratio of 0.7/2.3 to 1.6/1.7 and the resulting reaction product possessing an acid number of 10 to 50 mg KOH/g.

Elastomer

An elastomer is provided, which is a product of reacting C.sub.4-12 lactam, poly(C.sub.2-4 alkylene glycol), C.sub.4-12 diacid, and multi-ester aliphatic monomer. The C.sub.4-12 lactam and the poly(C.sub.2-4 alkylene glycol) have a weight ratio of 20:80 to 80:20. The total weight of the C.sub.4-12 lactam and the poly(C.sub.2-4 alkylene glycol) and the weight of the C.sub.4-12 diacid have a ratio of 100:0.5 to 100:10. The total weight of the C.sub.4-12 lactam and the poly(C.sub.2-4 alkylene glycol) and the weight of the multi-ester aliphatic monomer have a ratio of 100:0.01 to 100:5.

Elastomer

An elastomer is provided, which is a product of reacting C.sub.4-12 lactam, poly(C.sub.2-4 alkylene glycol), C.sub.4-12 diacid, and multi-ester aliphatic monomer. The C.sub.4-12 lactam and the poly(C.sub.2-4 alkylene glycol) have a weight ratio of 20:80 to 80:20. The total weight of the C.sub.4-12 lactam and the poly(C.sub.2-4 alkylene glycol) and the weight of the C.sub.4-12 diacid have a ratio of 100:0.5 to 100:10. The total weight of the C.sub.4-12 lactam and the poly(C.sub.2-4 alkylene glycol) and the weight of the multi-ester aliphatic monomer have a ratio of 100:0.01 to 100:5.

A coating composition includes a flexible hyperbranched polyol preparable by (a) reacting a polyol comprising at least three hydroxyl groups with an aliphatic dicarboxylic acid having from 6 to 36 carbon atoms or an esterifiable derivative of the aliphatic dicarboxylic acid to form a hydroxyl-functional first intermediate product; (b) reacting the first intermediate product with a cyclic carboxylic acid anhydride to form a carboxylic acid-functional second intermediate product; and (c) reacting the second intermediate product with an epoxide-functional compound having one epoxide group to form the hyperbranched polyol. The coating composition may be cured to a coating layer having excellent flexibility.

The coating composition may be cured to a coating layer having excellent flexibility.

A polyester resin including: structural unit (A) represented by a specific formula; structural unit (B) derived from an aliphatic diol having 3 to 8 carbon atoms (provided that the structural unit (A) is excluded); and at least one structural unit (C) selected from the group consisting of structural unit (c1) derived from a trivalent or higher-valent acid component and structural unit (c2) derived from a trihydric or higher-hydric alcohol component, the polyester resin including the structural unit (B) in an amount of 20 molar parts or more with respect to 100 molar parts of all the structural units derived from acid components.
