LIQUID BICONTINUOUS STABILIZED ASSEMBLIES BY INTERFACIAL JAMMING OF NANOPARTICLES

A method for preparing a stabilized assembly includes combining a first liquid phase including nanoparticles and a second, immiscible liquid phase, dissolving in the second phase a first end-functionalized polymer having a first molecular weight, and a second end-functionalized polymer having a second molecular weight, wherein the second molecular weight is greater than the first molecular weight, applying a shearing external deformation field to increase the surface area of the first phase to create a new interface, wherein the nanoparticle surfactants form a disordered, jammed assembly at the new interface, and releasing the shearing external deformation field. The polymer and the nanoparticles can interact at an interface through ligand interactions to form nanoparticle surfactants and upon releasing the external deformation field the jammed assembly at the new interface traps the first phase in a deformed state having the first liquid phase and the second liquid phase as interpenetrating domains.

PROCESS FOR MODIFICATION OF A SOLID SURFACE

A process for the modification of a surface of a solid material, including the step of contacting the surface with a surface-modifying compound under irradiation with light of a wavelength in the range of 200 to 800 nm optionally in the presence of a photoinitiator, wherein a) the surface has SiOH groups, COH groups or epoxy groups and the surface-modifying compound is a hydrosilane, or b) the surface has OSiH groups and the surface-modifying compound is a silanol or an alcohol.

Composite semipermeable membrane and method for manufacturing same

A composite semipermeable membrane capable of forming, on a surface of a porous support in a highly reproducible manner, a separation layer that is extremely thin and that exhibits superior separability. It provides, on a surface of a porous support, a composite semipermeable membrane that has an organic/inorganic hybrid separation layer that is extremely thin and that exhibits superior separability. A method for manufacturing a composite semipermeable membrane includes forming, on a surface of a porous support, a separation layer containing a cross-linked condensate having a siloxane bond by bringing an organic solution that contains an organic silicon compound containing three or more reactive functional groups, each of which is at least one type selected from a hydrolyzable group and a hydroxyl group, into contact with water or an aqueous solution on the porous support, and by performing interfacial polycondensation of the organic silicon compound.
