Effect pigments based on artificially produced substrates with a narrow size distribution

The invention relates to effect pigments comprising artificial platelet-shaped substrates which have at least one optically active coating, where the effect pigments have a volume-averaged cumulative undersize distribution curve with the characteristic numbers D.sub.10, D.sub.50 and D.sub.90, said cumulative undersize distribution curve having a span ΔD of 0.7-1.4, and the span ΔD being calculated in accordance with formula (I):
ΔD=(D.sub.90−D.sub.10)/D.sub.50  (I),
and the average thickness of the artificial platelet-shaped substrates being 500 nm to 2000 nm.

The present invention relates to pigments, comprising a plate-like substrate of glass having an average thickness of <1 μm, especially of from 20 nm to 400 nm, and (a) a dielectric material, especially a metal oxide, having a high index of refraction; or (a) a metal layer, especially a thin semi-transparent metal layer; a process for their production and their use in paints, ink-jet printing, for dyeing textiles, for pigmenting coatings (paints), printing inks, plastics, cosmetics, glazes for ceramics and glass.

Carbon black in effect pigments

The present application is directed to combination effect pigments comprising an effect pigment and carbon black, wherein the carbon black is adherently deposited on the effect pigment interposed within the substrate and at least one subsequent layer of the effect pigment. This structure of the combination effect pigment results in advantageous non-staining properties of the pigment and maximizes color effects of the carbon black.
