Nematic liquid crystal composition

A liquid crystal composition exhibits a positive dielectric anisotropy and sufficiently low viscosity without decreasing or increasing refractive index anisotropy or nematic phase-isotropic liquid phase transition temperature, and does not cause display failures. The liquid crystal composition contains one or more compounds selected from compounds represented by general formula (LC0) and one or more compounds selected from a group of compounds represented by general formula (LC1) to general formula (LC5), in which the liquid crystal composition contains one or more compounds in which at least one of A.sup.01, A.sup.02, and A.sup.11 to A.sup.42 in general formulae (LC0) to (LC4) represents a tetrahydropyran-2,5-diyl group.

To form an optical alignment film having large anchoring strength and suppress an AC afterimage of a liquid crystal display device, in a liquid crystal display device of an IPS mode. In an alignment film material subjected to optical alignment processing, polyimide which becomes a rigid high molecule and polyimide which becomes a flexible high molecule are mixed and used. The material of the present invention can easily rotate oligomer after irradiating polarized ultraviolet rays and improve a UV-absorbed two-color ratio of an alignment film. Accordingly, an anchoring strength for liquid crystals by the alignment film is large to suppress an AC afterimage.

First alignment is performed by forming an alignment layer that includes a photopolymerizable monomer or oligomer on a substrate and the like, introducing liquid crystal, and bringing the liquid crystal into contact with the alignment layer including the photopolymerizable monomer or oligomer. The liquid crystal is then subjected to secondary alignment by photopolymerizing the photopolymerizable monomer or oligomer including the alignment layer to form an alignment regulator in a state in which an electric field is applied to the liquid crystal to hange the alignment of the liquid crystal.

Liquid crystal display device and method for producing same

The present invention provides a liquid crystal display device that can prevent a decrease in the VHR and image sticking on the display screen because of residual DC voltage, and also can produce favorable alignment conditions; and a production method thereof. The liquid crystal display device of the present invention includes: a pair of substrates; a liquid crystal layer that contains liquid crystal molecules and is disposed between the pair of substrates; and an alignment film that is disposed on a liquid crystal layer side of at least one of the pair of substrates, the alignment film containing a polyamic acid or a polyimide with an imidization ratio of less than 100%, the liquid crystal display device including a monomolecular film on the alignment film.

Display device and manufacturing method thereof

According to one embodiment, a display device includes first and second substrates and a liquid crystal layer. The first substrate includes pixel electrodes and a first alignment film. The second substrate includes a common electrode and a second alignment film. The liquid crystal layer is provided between the alignment films and contains a streaky polymer and liquid crystal molecules. The first alignment film includes flat areas. A first director of the liquid crystal molecules located near the flat areas is substantially parallel to a horizontal plane in a state where no potential difference is formed between the pixel electrodes and the common electrode.
