A method for producing a sulphided copper sorbent includes the steps of: (i) contacting a sorbent precursor material containing one or more sulphidable copper compounds, with a sulphiding gas stream including hydrogen sulphide to form a sulphided sulphur-containing sorbent material, and (ii) subjecting the sulphided sulphur-containing sorbent material to a heating step in which it is heated to a temperature above that used in the sulphiding step and ?110? C., under an inert gas selected from nitrogen, argon, helium, carbon dioxide, methane, and mixtures thereof, the inert gas optionally including hydrogen sulphide. The method provides sulphided copper sorbents that have reduced levels of elemental sulphur.

A treatment composition for remediating for remediating H.sub.2S, CO.sub.2 and other contaminant(s) in a fluid mixture of contaminated liquids and gasses comprising: a hydrocarbon based liquid; and at least one hydroxide compound dispersed or dissolved into the hydrocarbon based liquid. The at least one hydroxide compound dispersed or dissolved into the hydrocarbon based liquid constitutes 30-50 wt % of the treatment composition, the at least one hydroxide compound includes at least one of potassium hydroxide and sodium hydroxide, and a pH of the treatment composition is in a range of 13-14.0.

A treatment composition for remediating for remediating H.sub.2S, CO.sub.2 and other contaminant(s) in a fluid mixture of contaminated liquids and gasses comprising: a hydrocarbon based liquid; and at least one hydroxide compound dispersed or dissolved into the hydrocarbon based liquid. The present application relates generally to processes, systems, and compositions for removing mercury from liquid hydrocarbons. In one embodiment, the application pertains to a method for removing mercury from hydrocarbons. The method comprises reacting a mercury species within the hydrocarbons with an additive composition to produce a reaction product. The reaction product typically comprises a different speciation for mercury than the original mercury species. The reaction product is then removed from the hydrocarbons. The additive composition employed comprises a sulfur or heteroatom donating substance and a substantially oil-soluble solvent.
