The system includes at least one support mounted on the top surface of the primary deck that supports the fixed head section. The two sliding rails and the fixed support are the same height so the entire secondary deck is elevated approximately 3 inches above the primary deck. A lock mechanism prevents the secondary deck from moving longitudinally over the primary deck. When assembled, the secondary platform is aligned and registered over the primary deck, and a mattress is placed over the secondary deck.

A sofa bed is convertible to a bunk bed using front and rear links coacting with gas cylinders to lift a bunk frame from the sofa position, in which it is used for seating, to a bunk bed position where seat cushions are used on the bunk and a mattress is available for a lower bunk, being lockable in a down, or seating position and lockable in and up, or bunk bed position with a brace and ladder deployable to secure the bunk.

Chests and cabinets configured to transition between a closed (stowed) position and an open (deployed) position having a folding mattress and a mattress platform stored within. The chest or cabinets may include a separable portion which acts as a support for the mattress platform when the cabinet is in the deployed position and as a drawer when in the stowed position. The mattress platform includes at least one feature for securing it to the separable portion when in the deployed position.
