A method for enhancing mixing and aeration of a liquid reaction medium in a toroidal bioreactor vessel includes dispensing a liquid reaction medium into an interior of a toroidal bioreactor vessel, the interior being bounded by an inner surface, a textured surface being arranged on at least a portion of the inner surface, the textured surface having a plurality of upstanding protuberances. The toroidal bioreactor vessel is rotated in an orbital motion such that there is a resonant frequency traveling wave of the fluid orbiting in one direction in the interior of the toroidal bioreactor vessel when a particular orbital speed is imparted to the toroidal bioreactor vessel.

CONCENTRICALLY BAFFLED REACTORS AND SYSTEMS THAT INCORPORATE THEM

In one embodiment, a concentrically baffled reactor includes an outer housing that defines an interior space, an inlet through which material can be delivered into the interior space, an outlet through which material can be removed from the interior space, and multiple concentric baffles within the interior space that define multiple concentric reactor zones through which the material can sequentially flow to the outlet.

The subject matter herein provides a biotic method for recovering one or more hydrocarbons from a feedstock that includes one or more of oil shale, bituminous tar sand, coal and cellulous at atmospheric temperature and pressure. The method comprises loading the feedstock into a container, treating the feedstock in the container with a biomedium of micro-organisms, and forming an essentially liquid mixture from the feedstock and the biomass by rotary tumbling the feedstock and the biomedium in the container. The essentially liquid mixture is then separated into the one or more hydrocarbons by centrifuging.

Methods and systems for iteratively improving culture condition for at least one culture output in a culture process. The methods comprise: a) providing a continuous culture of cells in a bioreactor, wherein the cells are cultured under culture conditions that comprise a set of culture parameters. and wherein the culture of cells produces at least one culture output at a first measure: b) while maintaining the cells in continuous culture, iteratively testing different culture conditions by: (i) selecting a new culture condition comprising a new set of culture parameters predicted to improve the measure of the culture output: (ii) perturbing the cells with the new culture conditions: and (iii) determining a new measure of the culture output: wherein testing is iterated to produce a plurality of improvements in the measure of culture output. The iterative process can be performed by an automated artificial intelligence.

DEVICE FOR CONTINUOUS VIRUS INACTIVATION

Embodiments include a device for continuous virus inactivation during a protein production process comprising a first and a second fluid inlet, a first mixer, and a fluid outlet. A first liquid stream containing a target protein is introducible into the device through the first fluid inlet and is combinable in a predefined volume ratio with a second, virus-inactivating liquid stream introducible into the device through the second fluid inlet to form a third, reactive liquid stream which is conducted through the first mixer for mixing in order to generate predefined, virus-inactivating conditions. The device further comprises a head part and, downstream of the first mixer and upstream of the fluid outlet, a residence time arrangement fluidically connected to the head part for provision of a minimum residence time of the third stream, wherein the head part and the residence time arrangement are rigidly fastened to each other.

REACTOR HAVING DYNAMIC SPARGER

Systems and methods relating to dynamic spargers for generating fine bubbles within reactors such as biological and chemical reactors. A sparger system is positioned within a reactor and comprises a support plate, multiple annular shrouds engaged with the support plate, and spargers positioned within the annular shrouds defining a gap between an interior surface of the annular shroud and an exterior surface of the corresponding sparger. Liquid flows through the defined gap between an interior surface of the annular shroud and an exterior surface of the sparger. Acceleration of the liquid through the gap shears bubbles at the exterior surface of the sparger creating bubbles or fine bubbles.
