The mattress in certain embodiments has an opening with at least one tube-shaped cushion which is adjustable for people with different body sizes and stages of recovery. The at least one tube-shaped cushion may be continuous, toroidal, round, square, rectangular, triangular, or any regular or irregular shape that would fit the buttocks. The at least one tube-shaped cushion may be inflatable, detachable, or permanently affixed in the opening. The mattress in certain embodiments may have the at least one tube-shaped cushion concentrically placed. The mattress in certain embodiments may have a raised back support for comfort along with a raised foot support to reduce the chance of blood clots. In other embodiments, the mattress can have an opening on a top or first side and a larger opening on a bottom or second side so that the mattress is reversible to accommodate different body sizes and stages of recovery. In other embodiments, the mattress may have at least one tube-shaped cushion in an opening on a top or first side and a larger opening on a bottom or second side to accommodate different body sizes and different stages of recovery. In other embodiments, the mattress may have a lumbar and thigh support which may be adjustable. The mattress and the tube-shaped cushion may be self-inflating in the case that they are inflatable.

Support apparatus, system and method

A therapeutic support device includes a bladder having one or more independently inflatable compartments, each including a plurality of inflatable cells. When inflated, each inflatable cell forms a contact node that may support a user or another object disposed thereon. The inflatable compartments can be alternately inflated and deflated such that contact pressure can be applied to and relieved from corresponding portions of the user's body in an alternating manner.

A pneumatically adjustable bladder system (90) for use in a cushioned seat bottom (24) has one or two rear foam filled bladders (62, 64) for location under the ischial tuberosities of a seated occupant of the seat bottom, and one or more expansion chambers (14, 16) or front foam filled bladders (66, 68) for location under the thighs of the seated occupant. There are air passageways (70, 72, 74, 92) interconnecting the bladders with each other or with an expansion chamber. The system is air tight and the bladders are compressible under the weight of the seated occupant and are expandable when the weight is removed. The compression of a bladder causes air therewith in to be displaced through the air passageways to the expansion chambers or to the other bladders, which then expand. The compression of a bladder under the ischial tuberosities of the seated occupant and the expansion of the expansion chambers or of the other bladders under the thighs of the seated occupant cause the seated occupant to experience a correct level of immersion into the cushioned seat bottom which is desired for effective postural support and prevention of lower back pain.

A system to generate and control a three-dimensional (3D) surface may include a surface supported by a plurality of actuating units, a control center, and a common media tank. The control center may include a movement control assembly that has a plurality of movement control unit, and each movement control unit is configured to control the movement of a corresponding actuating unit. In one embodiment, a predetermined amount of medium, such as air or liquid, is arranged in each actuating unit. The surface can be actually considered an array of small pieces divided from the surface, and supported and actuated by the actuating units. Since the control of the surface is through the control of every single piece thereof, the control of the surface would be more precise if the surface can be divided into more pieces.
